Produced for Australian television, the live-action fantasy series Pirate Islands combined traditional swashbuckling with state-of-the-art computer graphics. While playing their favorite computer game, 15-year-old Kate Redding (Brooke Harmon) and her two younger siblings, Nicholas (Nicholas Donaldson) and Sarah (Eliza Taylor-Cotter), were sucked into the game itself, emerging on a remote archipelago in the 18th century. Here the three youthful protagonists constructed a Swiss Family Robinson-style tree house and frequently skirmished with the villainous Captain Blackheart (Colin Moody) and his buccaneers. Also making life difficult for Kate and Company were a group of ragtag youngsters, the Castaway Children. All three factions competed with one another to unearth a fabulous buried treasure. Filmed on location in Port Douglas and Melbourne, and debuting in Australia in 2002, Pirate Islands joined the Saturday-morning lineup of America's Fox Network on March 8, 2003. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Created by Chris Roache, the Australian drama series Headstart spotlighted seven young adults who endeavored to "make their mark" in the business world by promoting their revolutionary new ideas. They were given this chance by Project Head Start, a program underwritten by Pac Star Banking Corporation. The seven twentysomethings were each given 20,000 dollars as a start-up fee and were moved into a rent-free loft for the duration of their contract. Mentoring the protagonists was reformed financial shark Garret Quinn (Blair Venn), who hoped to repair his shattered reputation by steering the younger characters away from those unscrupulous types (like himself) who would take advantage of their naïveté and hubris. Forty episodes of Headstart were aired in Australia beginning March 4, 2001. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Combining live action and "animatronics," the Australian TV children's sitcom Horace and Tina starred Jasmine Ellis as Lauren Parker, a 13-year-old Canadian girl who was uprooted and relocated Down Under when her mother remarried. Saddled with a distant stepfather and an obnoxious stepbrother, Lauren's existence was enlivened somewhat by the arrival on Christmas Eve of two "Nelfs," or Santa's Helpers: three-foot-tall, 200-year-old Horace (voiced by Frank Gallacher) and his 271-year-old sister Tina (voiced by Jackie Kelleher). Stranded in Australia until Santa's next stopover, Horace kept busy by making mischief, while Tina dispensed advice and homilies -- and of course, only Lauren could see or hear the Nelfs. Debuting May 4, 2001, Horace and Tina had yielded 26 episodes by the following year. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
