An underground lair serves as the point of inspiration for this deeply whimsical fantasy comedy (with echoes of Jodorowsky's Rainbow Thief) from French cause célèbre Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie, The City of Lost Children). The locale is post-9/11 Europe. As arms dealers go head to head with one another in a series of violent skirmishes -- suggesting that an apocalyptic cataclysm may be lingering on the horizon -- the unfortunate Bazil (Dany Boon) still reels from the long-ago death of his father from a roadside bomb, an event that left him orphaned as a boy. Now employed in a low-paying job as a video-store clerk, and still trying to determine how he fits into the scheme of things, he gets hit by a stray bullet from a drive-by shooting and promptly lands in the hospital. Upon release, he finds himself broke and unemployed. Hope soon crops up, however, in the form of Placard (Jean-Pierre Marielle), an ex-convict living in a scrap dump with a motley group of social outcasts -- all of whom welcome Bazil with warmth, compassion, and hospitality. Sure of his place for the first time in his life, Bazil joins forces with them to turn the dump into a lovely underground home, filled to the rafters with extraordinary inventions and sculptures. This wild and raunchy, adult-oriented animation remained in the Top Ten at the French box office for weeks after its premiere. Recalling the creations of Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, Heavy Traffic), it actually originated as a Canal Plus television series in the early 2000s that in turn evolved into a comic book before morphing into this feature. In a shoddy, run-down neighborhood at the edge of an unnamed European metropolis, two lowlifes, Joe Hustleton (rapper IZM) and Tony Pepperoni (Vincent Cassel), devise a couple of wild schemes to reel in enough money to land a vacation to sunny Santo Rico island. Each man adopts a unique approach: Joe decides to sell five kilos of cannabis that he picked up on credit from slimeball dealer Zoran (Gilles Lellouche), but if he doesn't pay the principal back in a reasonable amount of time, he's had it; Joe opts for a more straitlaced approach (so to speak) by simultaneously building a sauna at the palatial home of rich judge Nomercy (François Levantal) and guarding the man's house during his vacation -- a job that leads to enormous complications given Joe's serious yen for Nomercy's sexy daughter Clemence (Diane Kruger of Inglourious Basterds). Meanwhile, a number of unsavory supporting characters pop up, including a couple of porno directors, a possessive girlfriend, and two hoods who must hide out in a swimming pool when their plans to get to Santo Rico fall through. It's hard to say if the kids or the counselors need more supervision at the second-rate summer camp in this comedy from France. Vincent (Jean-Paul Rouve) runs "Ces Jours Heureux," a camp for kids in rural France, and as he gears up for the summer season, he has to round up a new staff of counselors to look after the campers. Vincent ends up with six eccentric twenty-somethings, including self-styled ladies' man Daniel (Lannick Gautry), Canadian party animal Truman (Guillaume Cyr), potty-mouthed lapsed Catholic Caroline (Josephine de Meaux), pretty but non-ambitious Lisa (Julie Fournier), handsome black guy Joseph (Omar Sy), and Nadine (Marilou Berry), who is made the camp medic by virtue of her status as a medical school drop-out. While the campers have to contend with bad weather, worse food and extended periods of boredom, the supposedly more mature counselors hardly fare much better, and occasionally face visits from the cops over the camp's various safety violations. Nos Jours Heureux (aka Those Happy Days) was written and directed by the team of Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, who previously scored a box office hit with Je Prefere Qu'on Reste Amis. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
