Intended as the pilot for the proposed weekly series "Peter Benchley's Mystery of the Deep," the made-for-TV Hunters of the Reef bears traces of such best-selling Peter Benchley novels as Jaws and The Deep. Much of the action is devoted to a race between two salvage-boat captains -- one poor, one rich -- to recover the valuables in a ship wrecked off the Florida coast. Needless to say, the waters surrounding the wreck are infested with sharks; it is perhaps also unnecessary to observe that among the "scavengers" is a gorgeous marine biologist (Mary Louise Weller) who happens to be a knockout in a diving suit. Filmed on-location in Key West, FL, Hunters of the Reef originally surfaced as part of NBC's prime-time schedule on May 20, 1978. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A widow finds her life unbearably dull and so becomes a volunteer CIA agent. She is sent to Mexico City for her first assignment and though her intentions are good, she ends up tossed into a jail. This was one of actress Rosalind Russel's final films and is sadly, considered among her very worst. Using a penname, she also wrote the screenplay. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

In this western comedy, a bogus evangelist and his assistant travel to the town of Friendly and endeavor to rob the West's purportedly most unrobbable bank. Unfortunately, they are not the only bandits planning to rob the bank. Their rivals in robbery include a Mexican bandido and his dullard son. A gunman and his assistant also want to attempt a heist. To make things even more confusing, a Texas Ranger and his six Chinese-American G-men pose as laundrymen to investigate a crooked mayor. They all converge on Friendly at the same time and chaos ensues when they meet. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Ivan Tors Productions, the firm responsible for such aquatic TV delights as Sea Hunt and Flipper, was the prime mover behind MGM's Around the World Under the Sea. The official stars include Lloyd Bridges, Shirley Eaton, Brian Kelly, David McCallum, Keenan Wynn, Marshall Thompson, and Gary Merrill. The real stars are underwater photographer Lamar Bowen, diving-sequence director Ricou Browning, and the folks in Tors' special effects department. The plot concerns a series of underwater volcanic eruptions. Sub commander Bridges (who else?) heads into the depths to find out the cause of the disturbances. Before the THE END sign presents itself, Bridges and his crew are nearly devoured by a sea monster and sucked into a vortex. Though the film's technology-both on-screen and behind the camera--is dated, Around the World Under the Sea is still credible, not to mention thoroughly enjoyable. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Ken Curtis, former singing cowboy and Gunsmoke's Festus, joined right-wing radio's Gordon McLendon in producing this hilariously bad monster movie about a horde of outsized rodents run amok on an isolated island. The creation of mad scientist Baruch Lumet (father of acclaimed director Sidney Lumet), the monster shrews (portrayed by collies in goofy rubber masks!) escape the lab during a hurricane and devour nearly every other animal on the island before seeking human prey -- including star James Best and girlfriend Ingrid Goude (1957's Miss Universe), who are stranded on the island by the same storm. The survivors manage to escape to safety thanks to some goofy contraptions constructed from trash cans. This one is best remembered by bad-film buffs for its tail-wagging canine stars and a multitude of famous names on both sides of the camera. Curtis and McLendon's companion film The Giant Gila Monster is slightly less ridiculous. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

Another Part Of The Forest begins some twenty years before the events of Lillian Hellman's play and movie The Little Foxes and shows how that film's Hubbard family became the ruthless, greedy lot they were. It's fifteen years after the Civil War, and the Hubbards dominate their small Southern town financially, if not socially; The patriarch of the family (Fredric March) sold salt for $8 a pound to the Confederate Army at a time when they needed it most. Edmond O'Brien and Dan Duryea play his sons, the former as mean as his father, the latter and younger one a weakling. When the elder child finds out that his father was responsible for the death of Southern troops during the war, he threatens to expose the truth unless the family fortune is placed in his hands. In the end, only Hubbard's wife (Florence Eldridge) stands by her husband during his inevitable fall, and she banishes her own children from their house. Brilliant acting by all, especially March, Duryea, and O'Brien, plus a sharp script, make this unrelentingly grim melodrama fascinating to watch. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide

Top Sergeant was the third of four inexpensive Universal action films top-billing Leo Carrillo, Andy Devine and Don Terry. Terry plays the title character, drill sergeant Dick Manson of the Engineer Corps. Carrillo and Devine are cast respectively as Corporals Frenchy Devereaux and Andy Jarrett, whose merry antics constantly land them in the stockade. All three protagonists are instrumental in capturing a gang of bank robbers, but one of the crooks (Don Porter) escapes after killing Manson's younger brother (Gene Garrick). The rest of the picture details Manson's herculean efforts to track down the murderer without going AWOL. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Dangerous Game was a 61-minute entry in the off-and-on Universal "B" adventure series starring Richard Arlen and Andy Devine. The emphasis is on laughs as the pair infiltrate a suspicious lunatic asylum. Amidst the genuine assorted nuts (all of whom behave "cuckoo" in 2-reel comedy fashion) are several perfectly sane criminals, using the asylum as headquarters. Arlen and Devine rout out the crooks, winning a huge cache of money in so doing. Jeanne Kelly, who later enjoyed a brief leading-lady career as Jean Brooks, provides the heart interest in A Dangerous Game. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this comedy-adventure two petroleum engineers must investigate strange reports from a Company outpost in the South Seas. The minute they arrive they are arrested, framed and sentenced to hard labor. They find themselves working for the local oil magnate. It seems that the crook is using the "convicts" as a source of cheap labor; he keeps all their salaries. The two investigators successfully incite an uprising against the malicious magnate and gain their freedom. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
