This 1977 animated collaboration -- the first of many -- between Australian cartoonist Richard Slapczynski and screenwriter John Palmer -- condenses Jules Verne's epic fantasy novel into a breezy 46 minutes. The short remains faithful to Verne's basic story: in late-19th century Hamburg, Professor Lindenbrock (voiced by Ron Haddrick) and his nephew, Alex, devise a theory that the center of the Earth might not actually be hot, as commonly suggested, but rather hollow. The two journey to Iceland and into the base of an expired volcano, encountering a world of prehistoric reptiles and a subterranean ocean. Along the way, Lindenbrock seizes a pterodactyl egg, taking it with him. The journey is short-lived, however, for the two are soon propelled into the air and up through the mouth of an Italian volcano by a surge of water. Back in Hamburg, everyone seems reluctant to believe the voyagers' claims, until the pterodactyl egg hatches, definitively proving Lindenbrock's theory to everyone. Aussie animation veterans Air Programs International, Ltd. (also responsible for the 1969 Australian animated adaptation of A Christmas Carol) produced this short, which utilizes basic yet stylish and warm visual design perfectly suited for young children and preteens. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

After Faith (Eliza Dushku) surrenders herself (see "Five by Five"), Angel (David Boreanaz) decides to try to rehabilitate her, incurring the wrath of Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter) and Wesley (Alexis Denisof), the latter of whom was recently tortured by the rogue slayer. Angel's ex-girlfriend and Faith's arch-nemesis, Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), arrives in town too late to warn the gang about Faith's imminent arrival. Buffy is devastated to learn that Angel has taken Faith under his wing. As Buffy and Angel battle it out, both verbally and physically, a group of assassins from the Watcher's Council attempts to recruit ex-Watcher Wesley back to their cause in order to eliminate Faith once and for all. Meanwhile, Wolfram & Hart, incensed at Faith's betrayal, turn to Det. Kate Lockley (Elisabeth Rohm) for a surprisingly legal method of revenge. As the forces against Faith continue to mount, Angel refuses to cede his protection of the girl. Ultimately, though, it's up to Faith herself to choose true penance. Originally broadcast May 2, 2000, on the WB network, "Sanctuary" marked season one, episode 19 of the supernatural comedy drama. Sarah Michelle Gellar, star of Angel's parent series, makes the second of many guest appearances (see also "I Will Remember You"). ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi

Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) finds herself inside Faith's (Eliza Dushku) body and being carted off on a gurney by the police. Having used a mystical Katra to switch her body with Buffy's, Faith marvels at her perfect disguise, mocking Buffy's do-gooder persona in front of the Summers' bathroom mirror. Meanwhile, while the police are transporting "Faith" to jail, a van pulls in front of the squad car, and three men jump out -- members of "the team" from the Watcher's Council -- kidnapping "Faith." Elsewhere, "Buffy," instead of hunting for Adam (George Hertzberg), goes to party at The Bronze. There, she meets Willow (Alyson Hannigan) and Tara (Amber Benson). Assuming they've met up with Buffy, Willow leaves Tara alone with her while she orders drinks. "Buffy" ridicules Tara, making fun of her stutter and telling her how in love Willow is with Oz (Seth Green). Afterwards, Tara tells Willow that Buffy didn't seem like herself. They both devise a spell to switch Buffy and Faith back into their own bodies. Ironically, while Faith is attempting to cause trouble while in Buffy's body, she experiences her first taste of love and kindness, being thanked by a person she saves from a vampire and even making tender love with Riley (Marc Blucas) -- who admits he loves Buffy for the first time. Adam also launches his war on humanity, sending vampires to attack a church, that, luckily, Riley is attending Sunday morning. ~ Matt Collar, Rovi

Another of the many cartoon permutations of the Batman franchise, the half-hour The Batman more or less returned to the basics of the Bob Kane original by depicting its title character as a wet-behind-the-ears rookie in the crimefighting business. Thus, millionaire Bruce Wayne was herein only in his early 20s, and had only recently adopted the cape and cowl of "The Batman" to do battle against the various villains infesting Gotham City. Acting as mentor, trainer and father confessor to the orphaned Bruce was faithful family butler Alfred Pennyworth, while The Batman's ever-growing array of weaponry and state-of-art paraphernalia was activated by Bruce's "Bat-Wave" remote control. Debuting September 1, 2004 on the WB network, The Batman spent its first season having Bruce Wayne/Batman confront several of his traditional antagonists--The Joker, The Penguin, The Riddler, Catwoman et. al.--for the very time. During season two, our hero underwent his first awkward meetings with his female opposite number Batgirl, aka Barbara Gordon. The series marked the first time since 1992 that someone other than Kevin Conroy supplied the voice of Batman; conversely, the show featured Adam West, who of course had played Batman in the 1966 live-action series of the same name, as the voice of Gotham City's mayor! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A discredited journalist (Daniel Craig) and a mysterious computer hacker discover that even the wealthiest families have skeletons in their closets while working to solve the mystery of a 40-year-old murder in this David Fincher-directed remake of the 2009 Swedish thriller of the same name. Inspired by late author Stieg Larsson's successful trilogy of books, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo gets under way as the two leads (Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara) are briefed in the disappearance of Harriet Vanger, whose uncle suspects she may have been killed by a member of their own family. The deeper they dig for the truth, however, the greater the risk of being buried alive by members of the family, who will go to great lengths to keep their secrets tightly sealed. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
