Sam Irvin directed this 2001 send-up of the classic horror films of the '50s and '60s. Starring Cassandra Peterson as her tradmark character, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, the film finds the well-endowed goth gal spending the night in a mysterious house while en route to Paris, France, circa 1851. Once there, the spooky gags fly as the movie lampoons everything from the work of Roger Corman to the Hammer films. When two of his school buddies manage to land dates, Bud (David Faustino) takes desperate action to keep up with his pals' social life. This includes getting hold of a life-sized mannequin (named "Monique") and using a vacuum cleaner to apply some artificial hickies. Meanwhile, Al (Ed O'Neill) hopes to strike it rich with his latest invention, "Shoe Lights", using Kelly as his reluctant demonstration model. Anthony Perkins stars as troubled baseball great Jimmy Piersall in Fear Strikes Out. Based on Piersall's shattering tell-all autobiography, the film traces Jimmy's ascent from the sandlots of Waterbury, CT, to the Boston Red Sox, with his domineering father (Karl Malden) pushing the boy beyond all reasonable limits. Unable to withstand the pressure, Piersall suffers a nervous breakdown and is confined to a mental institution. Through a long period of therapy, Jimmy realizes that he has excelled in baseball not for his own gratification but to please his father.
