Husband and wife co-directors Lina and Slava Chaplin examine the possibilities of an Arab-Jewish coupling in their 2001 romantic comedy A Trumpet in the Wadi. Thirty-year-old Huda (Khawlah Hag-Debsy) lives with her Christian-Arab family in the Wafi section of the coastal city of Haifa, Israel and has embraced her Israeli surroundings by immersing herself in its culture. However, her world is turned upside down when an eccentric Russian Jew named Alex (Alexander Senderovich) moves into her apartment building. A diminutive, hairy, and none-too-attractive musician who enjoys practicing his trumpet late into the evening, Alex is instantly smitten with Huda and begins to persistently woo his new neighbor -- who is not totally immune to his quirky charms. Despite both of their family's strong objections, Huda and Alex gradually fall in love with one another as they muddle their way through a new romance and come to terms with their disparate backgrounds. ~ Ryan Shriver, All Movie Guide

Director Danny Verete's Yellow Asphalt is an anthology of three unrelated stories -- Black Spot, Here is Not There, and Red Roots, respectively. Though the characters and situations in each film are remarkably different (one chronicles the aftermath of a hit-and-run, another concerns an unhappy marriage within a tribal community, and the last follows a woman in a blatantly abusive relationship), the central plots always revolve around the clash of modern Israeli life with ancient nomadic traditions. Yellow Asphalt, unique for its sympathy toward the oppression of Middle Eastern women, took seven years to make, and features Zevik Raz, Moshe Ivgi, Tatjana Blacher, Abed Zuabi, and Motti Katz. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

A young boy sets forth on an almost magical quest in this Palestinian children's drama set on the war-ravaged Gaza Strip. The boy, 12-year old Youssef, like his friends, lives in a broken home comprised of his mother, a fugitive brother, and a father who has been imprisoned by the Israelis. One day, pretty young Aida tells them a story about a family necklace imported from South America that is missing three jewels. To impress her, Youssef swears that he will find the missing stones. As he quests, the lad learns important messages about life and spiritual values. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
