A Cinderella story turns into a nightmare when a former waitress' perfect marriage gives way to adultery and physical abuse in this combination of domestic drama and revenge thriller. Motherless young woman Slim (Jennifer Lopez) works in a San Francisco diner with her best friend, Ginny (Juliette Lewis). After almost succumbing to the slick flirtation of an insincere customer (Noah Wyle), she is rescued by another dashing diner named Mitch (Bill Campbell). A few years later, the now happily married couple seem to have it all -- a perfect house, a precocious daughter (Tessa Allen), and a comfortable life. Then, Slim discovers that Mitch is actually a lothario who has been sleeping with other women behind her back. When she protests, he slaps her around and uses daughter Gracie as leverage to keep her in line. Slim enlists the help of her friends to escape with her child, though Mitch attacks and very nearly kills her in the process. Going on the lam, Slim adopts a series of new identities, wigs, and residences to avoid the goons Mitch has sent to retrieve her. Along the way, she receives help from Joe (Dan Futterman), a friend and old flame from college. Ultimately, Mitch and his unexpected allies so terrify Slim that she must turn the tables and transform herself from hunted to hunter. In doing so, she receives some surprise assistance of her own -- from Jupiter (Fred Ward), the rich father who abandoned her mother years ago. Though Larry vehemently refuses to admit that he has a problem, Artie (Rip Torn) and Roseanne stage an intervention after realizing that Larry's (Garry Shandling) addiction to painkillers is spiraling out of control. While Artie and Roseanne hold Larry at home and force him to quit cold turkey, suspicions around the office are aroused when Pat Sajak sits in for Larry during his week-long convalescence. Roseanne forces Larry to come clean with his crew, but their supportive display is spiked with cynicism when Paula (Janeane Garofalo) wins the office pool with her speculation that Larry's absence was drug-related. As Larry returns to the office longing for the company of Roseanne, the two express their feelings for one another over lunch, leading to an unexpected kiss and a proposal from Larry. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

NYPD Blue begins its second season with 15th Precinct police officer Janice Licalsi (Amy Brenneman) on trial for the killing of mob functionary Marino. Despite having suppressed evidence that would have incriminated Janice, Detective John Kelly (David Caruso) testifies on her behalf -- and outside chambers, Kelly tells Robin Wirkus (Debrah Farentino) of his innermost feelings. Elsewhere, the squad investigates a series of robberies targeting drug dealers, and Andy Sipowicz, (Dennis Franz), busy on a case involving a battered wife, must agree to signing a contract with his AA sponsor, Dan Breen (Peter Boyle), before renewing his romance with another recovering alcoholic. With this episode, Gail O'Grady (Donna Abandando), Gordon Clapp (Greg Medavoy), and Sharon Lawrence (Sylvia Costas) graduate from recurring-characters to full "series regular" status. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Natalya Negoda guest stars as Irina Cooper, a "green card bride" from the former Soviet Union. When Irina's wealthy husband is murdered, the subsequent investigation reveals that she was primed to take a job against his wishes and to enter into an extramarital affair -- whereupon he planned to divorce her just before she was qualified to claim American citizenship. In one of those bizarre twists of fate so beloved by the writers of The Fugitive, both Richard Kimble (David Janssen) and the elusive "one-armed man" Fred Johnson (Bill Raisch) are seriously injured in an explosion--and both end up in the same hospital. Temporarily blinded in the blast, Kimble must rely on young freelance photographer Howey's Keever (Tim Considine) to help him evade arrest long enough to bring Johnson to justice. But Kimble's efforts may come to naught thanks to Howey's uncle, who is all for turning the fugitive over to the police--thus allowing the murderous Johnson to escape scot-free again. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Perry Mason (Raymond Burr) must once again put his social life on hold when he is summoned to his alma mater, Cal State. Though he'd been slated to merely pick up an award, Perry ends up defending student Van Fowler (James Noah) on a murder charge. The victim is Professor Stuart Logan (G.B. Atwarter), who after accusing his entire class of cheating on an exam was himself labelled a cheater by the hapless Fowler, who had helped to write Logan's best-selling book but received neither credit nor compensation for his efforts. A pretty strong motive indeed--but Perry is a bit too swift for both the prosecution and the real murderer. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
