Two teenagers think they have problems until they come to the rescue of a girl with a fishy story to tell in this teen-oriented comedy. Thirteen-year-old Claire (Emma Roberts) and same-aged Hailey (Joanne "JoJo" Levesque) are two close friends living in Tampa, FL, who are facing a separation in a few weeks -- Claire's mother is a marine biologist who has been given a prestigious new job in Australia, meaning the girls are not likely to see much of each other again. While the girls wonder if there's anything they can do to avoid the inevitable, a storm breaks out and the waves toss an unusual example of sea life into Hailey's swimming pool -- Aquamarine (Sara Paxton), a teenaged mermaid who has some problems of her own. Aquamarine's father is a leader of the undersea world who has arranged for his daughter to marry a boy whom she doesn't care for. It seems Dad doesn't put much stock in the land-locked notion of love, and unless Aquamarine can prove to him that it's real, she will have to go through with the wedding. Claire and Hailey find Aquamarine, and discover that she fortunately sprouts legs when on dry land during the daylight hours; after learning of her romantic dilemma, they decide to help her by teaching her how to turn the head of Raymond (Jake McDorman), a cute lifeguard at the nearby beach. However, pretty Aquamarine learns her lessons well enough to make Cecilia (Arielle Kebbel), a mean girl with a crush on Raymond, jealous, leading her into a battle over the young man's affections, which Aquamarine has to win if she wants to avoid a loveless marriage. Aquamarine was the first feature film from director Elizabeth Allen. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Add Game Over [Animated TV Series] to QueueAdd Game Over [Animated TV Series] to top of Queue
UPN's first prime-time CGI-animated comedy series, Game Over dealt with the Smashenberns, a family of computerized video game characters. Mom Raquel Smashenbern (voiced by Lucy Liu) was a dead ringer for Lara Croft, dad Rip Smashenbern (voiced by Patrick Warburton) would not be out of place as a Grand Prix racer, and 13-year-old Billy and 14-year old Alice spent most of their time figuring out just what game they'd be best suited for (you know those teenagers; they never feel like they quite belong). Also in the cast was the family's 300-pound pet, Turbo, one of those amorphous, unrecognizable blobs that tended show up in real video games if the player forgot to defrag. The Smashenburns' nutty neighbors were the Changs, a clan of battling Shaolin Monks. Living in the alternate "afterworld" of Game Over, the main characters struggled to fulfill their strenuous video game duties while trying to maintain a semblance of normality in their private lives. In several instances, genuine video game characters showed up in guest roles. Debuting March 10, 2004, Game Over, produced by the same people responsible for 3rd Rock From the Sun and That '70s Show, lasted a scant six half-hour episodes, only five of which were seen before it was canceled by UPN. The network also briefly maintained an online PC game to be played in conjunction with the program. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The most adorable little superheroines in all of Townsville make the jump to the big screen in this feature-length animated adventure based on the popular Cartoon Network series The Powerpuff Girls. Brilliant scientist Professor Utonium (voice of Tom Kane) is performing an experiment in his lab when Jojo, a monkey trained to assist the professor, accidentally drops a bottle of hyper-powerful Chemical X into a mixture of sugar, spice, and everything nice. To the professor's surprise, what should emerge from the subsequent chemical reaction but three little girls: bright and practical Blossom (voice of Cathy Cavadini), sweet and sunny Bubbles (voice of Tara Strong), and tomboyish Buttercup (voice of Elizabeth Daily). Professor Utonium discovers that the girls have remarkable powers and super-human strength, and he hopes they'll be able to improve life in the crime-infected City of Townsville. However, after their first day at Pokey Oaks Kindergarten with Ms. Keane (voice of Jennifer Hale), the girls learn that having super powers can be both a blessing and a curse. Rejected by their classmates and quite unhappy, the girls are easily swayed when Mojo Jojo (voice of Roger L. Jackson), a superintelligent monkey in a turban, asks them to help him with a campaign to save the city. What the girls don't know is that Mojo Jojo is actually the monkey who once assisted the Professor; now he's embraced evil and hopes to use the Powerpuff Girls as part of his criminal scheme to wrestle control of Townsville away from the dense but well-meaning Mayor (voice of Tom Kenny). The Powerpuff Girls Movie was directed and co-written by Craig McCracken, who created the original television show as well as writing most of the episodes. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

After being given the briefest of trial runs in 2000, the half-hour cartoon series Chalk Zone joined the Nickelodeon Friday-night lineup on March 22, 2002. The hero of the series was ten-year-old Rudy Tabootie, an aspiring cartoonist. In his efforts to escape the adult hypocrisy and hot air all around him, Rudy regularly retreated into his own fantasy world via a chalkboard portal. Here he conspired and commiserated with the "ghosts" of chalk drawings previously erased by Rudy's clueless elders. E.G. Daily of Rugrats fame provided the voice of Rudy. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
