A small-time con artist gets a chance to become a real hero after crashing a wedding, and meeting a little girl who may be his long-lost daughter. Clever grifter Shiva (Akshay Kumar) is living it up at a stranger's wedding when he falls for Priya (Sonakshi Sinha), a pretty guest who succumbs to his effortless charms. But it all goes wrong when six-year-old Neha shows up claiming to be the daughter Shiva never knew. At first crafty Shiva simply brushes her aside. But when a group of dangerous gangsters get Shiva locked in their sights, he realizes he'll have to fight back in order to save Priya and Neha. But it won't be easy, because in order to succeed Shiva will have to travel to the town of Bahir, where a corrupt MLA (Minister of Legislative Assembly) rules with an iron fist. An eccentric musician from a small Indian village sets out in search of an old friend who moved to Mumbai in this upbeat Bollywood comedy. Michael Pinto is in his twenties, but he's never left his sleepy Goan village. His naïve perspective of the outside world may not be accurate, but with his overprotective mother by his side he's never had any reason to venture out and learn how things really work. He's got a knack for getting into mischief, and lately he's been missing his childhood pal Sameer, who stopped responding to his letters shortly after packing his bags for Mumbai. When Pinto loses his beloved mother, however, he realizes that the time has come to leave the village and seek out Sameer. The title of Saawariya carries a double meaning; it refers to both an epithet for the Hindu god Krishna and to a title sought by many Indian lovers, who wish to reach a state of "Saawariya," or overpowering consumption by love. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's romantic drama Saawariya weaves the tale of the ill-fated romance between two such individuals: artist Raj, who finds the fulfillment of his soul's yearning when he enters one of the most picturesque rural hamlets in India, and his lover, Sakina, a mysterious young woman whom he spots standing on a bridge. Set in the early 1900s, this film follows a young man named Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan) on his way home to India after having spent the past ten years in London. As the news reaches Devdas and his ex-love Paro's (Aishwarya Rai) respective households, the family matriarchs remember when the young couple were still children. When Devdas' mother found out the two wanted to get married, she refused to give her consent, and in doing so, set off a sequence of events which would lead Devdas into alcoholism. Though Paro has agreed to an arranged marriage with a wealthy landowner, she still loves Devdas, and is determined to lure him away from his constant drinking. Romantic misunderstandings, unrequited love, and the gap between two very different cultures provide the backdrop for this romantic musical drama from India. Sameer (Salman Khan) is a gifted singer from Europe who has come to New Delhi to study Indian vocal techniques with Pandit Darbar (Vikram Gokhale). Darbar's beautiful daughter Nandini (Aishwarya Rai) makes a strong impression on Sameer, and soon he's head over heels in love. But everyone advises Sameer to stay away from the girl, and Nandini is set up in a marriage with Vanraj (Ajay Devgan), a successful lawyer. But Nandini isn't happy with her new husband, and Vanraj soon finds evidence that his wife has been corresponding with Sameer, who has since returned to Europe. A jealous Vanraj packs his bags and sets out to find the singer, wanting to know the nature of the relationship between him and Nandini. With top "Bollywood" star Salman Khan in the lead, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was a major box-office success in India, and was enthusiastically received in screenings at the 2000 Vancouver Film Festival and 2000 Seattle Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
