A haunted New Orleans cop realizes that one of his oldest friends may be the ringleader of a vicious crime ring while teaming with a seasoned detective to investigate a brutal underworld killing. Detective Sean Reilly (Johnny Strong) is the head of the distinguished "Street Crimes" crime squad in the Big Easy. He's still recovering from the recent death of his son when his wife walks out on him, and his partner is killed during a brutal ambush. Sympathetic yet reluctant to lose one of his best men, Captain Trehan (Tom Berenger) partners Sean with Detective William Ganz (Kevin Phillips). Their mission: sniff out the clues in a brutal gangland slaying, and brink the killer to justice. Later, as all evidence points to Colin (Sean Patrick Flanery), a lifelong friend of Sean's and a defense contractor who has recently returned from the Middle East, the stakes suddenly get higher than anyone could have anticipated. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Ostracized, abused, and humiliated by his close-minded classmates, a gay high school student from a conservative Colorado town learns how to defend himself by enlisting the aid of a sympathetic martial arts expert. McClain comes from a community that believes AIDS is a punishment from God, tailor made for people who live a sinful, gay lifestyle. After McClain is severely beaten by classmates for the simple crime of being gay, he vows to never be the victim again. Later forming a close bond with local martial arts expert Karen, McClain is schooled in the fine art of self-defense. When McClain begins using his new skills in an aggressive manner rather than for their original intention, questions of honor, the plight of the defenseless, and the corrosive effects of bigotry on people from all backgrounds prompt both student and sensei to look into their pasts for answers to their current problems. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A low level mob enforcer with guns to spare and a gorgeous girl by his side discovers that he has lost control of his own fate in first-time feature filmmaker William Kaufman's eerie crime thriller. Truman Fisher (Holt Boggs) has been singled out as the natural successor Claude Rains - an ageing but notoriously sadistic assassin with a fearsome reputation. While for most aspiring hit-men this would be something of an honor, Truman begins to experience serious reservations when the mythical killer begins systematically butchering the mob family that currently employs Truman. Now, as Truman sets out into the underworld in search of the elusive Rains, he finds that the closer he gets to his target the farther his own sanity begins to slip. Of course this would be one thing if Rains were an easy target that was ripe for killing - in that case Fisher could just fire the fatal shot and clear his weary head - but with every advance Fisher makes and every bullet he dodges it begins to seem as if Rains is actually relishing the prospect of the pair's inevitable confrontation. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The classic science fiction novel by H.G. Wells becomes this big-budget adventure directed by the author's great-grandson Simon Wells. Guy Pearce stars as Alexander Hartdegen, a scientist, professor, and inventor in 1895 New York City who believes that time travel is possible. The sudden and unexpected death of his fiancée spurs Alexander to build a time machine, which he hopes to use in an effort to change the past. When he is unable to change the past, Alexander hurls himself more than 800,000 years into the future, seeking answers about the nature of time, but instead encountering a dystopian world where humanity has divided up into two races, the peaceful Eloi and the subterranean Morlocks. Befriending the beautiful Eloi woman Mara (pop singer Samantha Mumba), Alexander must set out to save her from the underground world of the Morlocks when she is captured by them. Along the way, he is aided by Vox (Orlando Jones), a bio-mechanical being from the 21st century. Ultimately, Alexander makes a shocking discovery about the true nature of the Eloi and Morlocks and decides that the only way to change the future is to alter the present. Due to exhaustion, director Wells was briefly replaced during the last few weeks of production by Gore Verbinski, director of The Mexican (2001). The Time Machine co-stars Jeremy Irons and Mark Addy. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi
