It's the weight of tradition versus youthful vigor when loudmouth Torquay lawn bowling superstar Cliff Starkey (Paul Kaye) catches wind of an upcoming championship match between England and heated rivals Australia. He's determined to make the national team in a bid to bring his sport-of-choice into the new millennium. Quickly acquiring a flashy American agent (Vince Vaughn) and becoming the most popular player in England, Cliff vows to dethrone traditionalist champion Ray Speight (James Cromwell), who has made no secret his hatred of Cliff's brash showmanship. When Cliff starts seeing Ray's daughter, the competition really begins to heat up. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Shane Meadows directed this film, which is the third and final chapter in his Nottingham Trilogy which also includes 1999's A Room for Romeo Brass and 1997's Twentyfourseven. Starring The Full Monty's Robert Carlyle, Once Upon a Time in the Midlands is a twist on the traditional Western film, transplanting the action to modern-day Nottingham, England. Jimmy (Carlyle) is a small-time criminal who comes back into town after seeing his old girlfriend turn down a marriage proposal on television. Rhys Ifan (Notting Hill) co-stars as Dek, the jilted proposer who looks to stop Jimmy from rekindling the relationship. Once Upon a Time in the Midlands screened as part of the Director's Fortnight at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

A spin-off of Channel 4's Vic Reeves' Big Night Out, the British sketch-comedy series The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer was yet another outlet for the peculiar humor of Reeves and his partner Bob Mortimer. Regular features included "Slade at Home," "Stars in Their Eyes," and "The Petomaines" (which, one imagines, was as aromatic as its title -- not to mention the title of the series itself). Other highlights were provided by the team's Hibernian alter egos, Mulligan and O'Hare, and their "drag" characters Wright and Arrowsmith. And as a bonus, Vic and Bob demonstrated how to build a coconut (you had to be there). A joint production of Channel X and BBC2, the 12 half-hour episodes of The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer were seen from September 21 to October 26, 1993, and from May 5 to June 9, 1995. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Although only comedian Vic Reeves' name appeared in the titles, he co-starred on this surrealistic British sketch-comedy series with his longtime stage and writing partner Bob Mortimer. While most of the skits and gags were one-shots, the series also contained a number of wild recurring features, among them "Wavy Davy" and "Novelty Island." Fred Aylward also appeared on a weekly basis. Fourteen half-hour episodes of Vic Reeves' Big Night Out, together with one 45-minute and one hour-long "special," were telecast from 1990 to 1991. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
