A lawman infiltrates Paris's criminal underground to bring a gang of killers to justice in this violent thriller. When the dust settles, Vargas is a fugitive and a large number of officers are dead. Police detective Vincent Drieu (Richard Berry) is put in charge of the investigation to find Vargas and his henchmen, and after losing patience with his fellow gumshoes, Drieu begins working undercover, hoping to find Vargas's associates by passing as a fellow member of the criminal fraternity. In time Drieu finds a pair of cops who understand his style and working methods, Kathia (Aissa Maiga) and Wazemme (Bernard Blancan), and together they dig deep into the French underground, courting danger as they become friends with the people they intend to put behind bars. French director Philippe Le Guay's comedy One Fine Day observes the behavior that may erupt when fate deals a new set of cards to a perpetual loser. Seemingly for years on end, French banker François Berthier (Benoit Pooleverde) has endured a lackluster, burdensome existence, with no perceivable light at the end of the tunnel. Each day carries a new set of hidden frustrations for him. On one particularly dour Monday, Murphy's Law is in full force: the espresso machine explodes, showering François with coffee; he endures a jam-packed, claustrophobic train ride to work; his boss terrorizes him relentlessly; his soon to be ex-wife Caroline (Anne Consigny) indicates that she's almost done with their divorce papers; François bombs at tennis. One man demonstrates how to get rich selling warring nations the tools of their deadly trade in this dark comedy drama. Yuri Orlov (Nicolas Cage) is an opportunistic businessman who stumbled into a gold mine after the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Huge caches of Soviet weapons became available at bargain prices (and even for free if one wasn't above stealing), and as literally billions of dollars' worth of Soviet military technology disappeared, it began finding its way into the hands of weapons dealers eager to sell it to the highest bidder. Orlov was one such dealer who found plenty of buyers for guns and military gear in unstable Third World nations, who paid cash and didn't appreciate too many questions. Orlov's exploits in the arms business quickly made him a very rich man, but they've also led to some unwanted attention from Jack Valentine (Ethan Hawke), an Interpol agent who is convinced Orlov isn't playing by the rules. A man keeping a few too many secrets finds them coming back to haunt him in this farcical comedy. Barnie (Fabrice Luchini) is an ordinary looking guy working in the shipping business who happens to have an unusually busy love life. While seemingly happily married to Lucie (Nathalie Baye) in Calais, Barnie has not one but two lovers in London -- Margot (Marie Gillian), a younger woman who works in commercial art, and Mark (Hugo Speer), a man employed by an auction house. Lucie doesn't know about Barnie's lovers, and neither Margot nor Mark is aware of Barnie's wife -- or his bisexuality. As chance would have it, all three decide upon the same present for Barnie's 45th birthday -- tickets for a getaway to Venice on the Orient Express. Barnie decides holding on to his marriage is his first priority, so he opts to visit Venice with Lucie, sending back Mark and Margot's tickets with polite notes of regret. However, Mark's letter is sealed in Margot's envelope and vice versa, and soon the two know about each other, with a little detective work tipping them off to the full extent of Barnie's secret life. James Huth co-scripted and made his directorial debut with this French comedy offering inventive and appealing aspects not unlike the memorable innovations that distinguished Delicatessen (1990). Crime fiction editor Claire (Michele Laroque of Ma Vie en Rose) lives in a jazzy, glass-bricked duplex apartment and works for a publisher who displays vintage pulp art on the company's line of thrillers. Attending her dinner party, on the eve of her 35th birthday, are jack-a-dandy Sacha (Antoine Basler), proper physician Charles (Michel Vuillermoz), and cool Hakim (Zinedine Soualem). When Claire surprises the assembled group by announcing that she intends to choose a husband from the trio, the men resent the idea, putting Claire in an edgy frame of mind. The fourth dinner guest, Ruitchi (Gilles Privat), isn't attracted to women, so he's the odd man out. Straight-arrow Cop Cellier (Albert Dupontel), keeps returning to the door while searching for two burglars in the neighborhood. Claire is in the kitchen cooking duck with blood sauce when an accident results in one less potential husband. As the evening wears on, a process of elimination does away with others on her list. Manuel Pradal makes his feature-film debut with this free-form tale of Marie (Vahina Bronchain), a seductive 14-year-old child/woman who works in an American naval base canteen during the 60s. The base is located near an undetermined Mediterranean resort area. When not amusing herself with the occasional sailor, Marie finds herself drawn to the cruel teenage boy Orso, a tough thief who has just robbed a resort so he can buy a gun. Together, Marie and Orso travel to a remote island, but instead of finding paradise, the two find only meaningless violence. There is not much to the story, but what makes this film interesting is Pradal's use of cinematography to create dream-like effects fraught with symbolism. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
