A word of explanation for the unfamiliar: the Salzburg Marionette Theater, located in Salzburg, Austria, performs conventional works of musical theater and opera, but - per its name - eschews traditional onstage actors and actresses and has minutely-detailed marionette puppets, controlled by offstage puppeteers with strings, act and dance the principal roles. The voices are performed by offstage cast members, and sung atop the puppetry. This particular Salzburg production offers a marionette version of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 1790 opera buffa Cosi fan tutte, The comic premise, which concerns fiancée-swapping, combines elements of Cymbeline and The Taming of the Shrew, as well as Procris. This version, from 1995, is narrated by two-time Oscar winner Peter Ustinov, a little less than a decade before his death. Pilar Lorengar voices Fiordiligi, Teresa Berganza voices Dorabella, and Ryland Davies voices Ferrando. The London Philharmonic Orchestra, under the masterful baton of the eminent Sir Georg Solti, lends musical accompaniment. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Manon of the Spring (Manon des Sources) has also been released as Jean de Florette II in the US, as it is a sequel to Claude Berri's Jean de Florette. Both films are drawn from the same source: Filmmaker/novelist Marcel Pagnol's 1952 rural romance, also titled Jean de Florette. Manon (Emmanuelle Beart), now fully grown, is a shepherdess who prefers to keep her distance from the local villagers. She is determined to uncover the truth behind the death of her father (played by Gerard Depardieu in Jean de Florette) and to wreak vengeance on the men she holds responsible. The more sympathetic of the two men, Ugolin (Daniel Auteil), is in love with Manon, but this does not weaken her resolve. She causes the village's water supply to diminish, blaming this action upon Ugolin and his duplicitous co-conspirator Cesar (Yves Montand). The upshot of this vengeful behavior ends in tragedy for all concerned. The joint winners of eight French Cesar awards, Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring were released to the U.S. in tandem in 1987. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Composer Jacques Offenbach's 1881 opera The Tales of Hoffmann (Les Contes de Hoffmann) became his swan song, the composer dying four months prior to the first performance. It has since earned its place as an operatic staple, revived frequently over the decades and occasionally receiving slightly different interpretations. The basic story remains the same, however -- the poet Hoffmann is tricked by The Muse (who assumes the guise of his best friend, Niklausse) into loving three different women, Olympia, Antonia, and Giuletta, actually all facets of the same woman, Stella. Because none are able to reciprocate (for varying reasons), Hoffmann is eventually forced to swear his love and devotion to The Muse herself. This release, retitled Some Tales of Hoffmann, is actually a film of Michael Kaye's unique stage production. In Kaye's interpretation, Hoffmann finds himself entrapped in a realm of delirium, surrounded by incarnations of various people who have played a part in his creative regression. Franco-Spanish tenor Daniel Galvez-Vallejo portrays the title character here, with Natalie Dessay, Barbara Hendricks, Jose van Dam, and Isabelle Vernet among the supporting cast members. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
