Aggie Herring Movies

In films from 1919, Aggie Herring was a useful comic foil for such comedians as Harold Lloyd. Aggie's dramatic assignments included the role of Miss Corney in Oliver Twist (1922). She also played Maggie Kelly in director Frank Capra's very first Columbia feature, That Certain Thing (1928), which earned her a photo in Capra's autobiography The Name Above the Title. Aggie Herring continued portraying frontier mothers, flower ladies, dowagers and charwomen until her retirement in 1938, a year before her death. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Though it looks as though he and the entire town will be ruined financially, Winthrop emerges triumphant when he manages to outwit up a gang of stock swindlers. Lynne Overman has some good moments as one of the crooks, Steve Dorset by name, who intends to go straight for the sake of his spouse Nancy (the "wife" of the title, played by Una Merkel), but he can't resist trying to pluck a fat goose like Winthrop. The Dark Hour was based on The Last Trap, a mystery novel by Sinclair Gluck. The setting is one of those Old Dark Houses which proliferated in 1930s "B"-pictures. Elsa Carson (Irene Ware), mistress of the house, fears that her weird uncles intend to do her harm and calls in detectives Landis (Ray Walker) and Bernard (Berton Churchill) for protection. It isn't long before the two gumshoes come upon the body of Elsa's Uncle Henry (William V. Vong), who appears to have been starved to death (in less than 24 hours!) The gathered suspects are unable to account for their movements at the time of the murder, making our heroes' job doubly difficult. For a while, it looks as though the butler did it (honest!), but Landis believes that the killer is someone less suspicious. He's right -- but to reveal more would be to reveal all. Ashbrook's novel The Murder of Stephen Kester, Green Eyes gets off to a powerful start when host Stephen Kester (Claude Gillingwater) is found stabbed in a closet during a weekend masquerade party. The principal suspects are Kester's daughter Jean (Shirley Grey) and her fiancé Cliff (William Bakewell), whose planned marriage had been violently opposed by Jean's father. One of the party guests, mystery writer Bill Tracy (Charles Starrett), suggests to Inspector Crofton (John Wray) that there were others who wanted to see Kester dead, notably his business associates Pritchard (Alden Chase) and Hall (Arthur Clayton). When Hall commits suicide, leaving a note confessing to the murder, Crofton is satisfied -- but Tracy isn't. Based on an idea by Will Rogers, the story concerns the efforts by the President of the United States to get the public's mind off the Depression. To this end, he appoints Broadway impresario Lawrence Cromwell (Warner Baxter) to the new cabinet position of "Secretary of Amusement." Wasting no time, Cromwell sets about to nationalize the entertainment industry, organizing singers, dancers, actors and other variety artists into batallion-like touring units. Cromwell is fought at every turn by a cartel of wealthy industrialists, who've been profiting from the Depression and have no desire to see America pull itself upward. Happily, every effort to bribe or cajole Cromwell into giving up his mission is thwarted and the Department of Amusement goes on to help the the country at a time when its citizens most needed it. Among the highlights are an energetic "revival-meeting" musical number by Aunt Jemima (Theresa Gardella), and 6-year-old Shirley Temple's rendition of "Baby Take a Bow." The grand old trouper Charles Grapewin heads the cast as vagabond journalist Ed Tilford, who leaves his wife Cordelia (Emma Dunn) behind to manage his newspaper when he's seized once more by Wanderlust. The Tilford sons, Russell (William Bakewell) and Eddie (Glen Boles), are raised to believe that their father died in WW I. Mae West's first starring film, She Done Him Wrong literally saved Paramount Pictures from bankruptcy. It would remain the best of her feature films, most of which were severely watered down by the Production Code (whose renewed stringency of 1933 was brought about in great part by West herself). A huge box office success and a key film in James Cagney's rise to stardom, this drama stars Cagney as Matt Nolan, a gritty New York City cab driver who is being squeezed by a monopolistic taxi trust which uses force to run him and other independent cabbies away from the most profitable locations. Nolan joins forces with Pop Riley (George Kibbee), whose cab is smashed by a truck when he refuses to cooperate with the syndicate. Kibbee is sent to prison for shooting at the truck driver. Nolan is dating his daughter, Sue (Loretta Young), and they enter a Peabody dance contest at a local nightclub. Cagney dances on screen for the first time, and so does George Raft as Willie Kenny, another dancing tough guy who was a friend of Cagney's, who pushed Warner Bros. to give Cagney the role. Nolan marries Sue Riley, and she tries to get him to cool down. But the taxi trust goons kill his brother Danny (Ray Cooke), and Nolan goes on a rampage. A young Irish lassie, Kathleen arrives in New York to marry Terry (Charles Delaney), a poor but honest plumber. At a party given by her Aunt Nora Shannon (Aggie Herring), Kathleen dallies with unscrupulous political boss Dan Moriarity (Robert Elliott), whom she mistakes for a gentleman. When a jealous Terry denounces the girl, Moriarity asks her to marry him. At their wedding, a rabble-rouser accuses Moriarity's henchmen of having committed murder and is shot by the groom right in front of a terrified Kathleen. Having finally realized her intended's true character, Kathleen quickly returns to a forgiving Terry. Boucicault's sentimental melodrama had been filmed three times before, in 1906 by Edwin S. Porter, in 1913 starring Mary Fuller, and in a sumptuous 1919 version featuring a miscast Theda Bara. The tall and virile Johnny Mack Brown portrays the short and dyspeptic outlaw William Bonney, a.k.a. Billy the Kid. Wallace Beery is more effectively cast as Pat Garrett, the sheriff who's sworn to bring in Billy dead or alive despite his grudging friendship for the young killer. Hardly the "homicidal moron" described by western historians, the movie's Billy has a certain amount of charm, though he's shown to be a cold-blooded killer when the opportunity arises. The film's ending was shot twice: One ending retained fidelity to the facts by having Garrett kill Billy, while the other denouement allowed Billy to ride into the sunset, as Garrett beatifically looked on. Over the protests of western purists, the second ending was used in the American release version, though the more tragic climax was seen by European audiences. Vaudeville magicians Jack (Jack Mulhall) and Mary (Dorothy Mackaill) split up, whereupon Mary teams with dancer Murray (John Miljan). But when Murray tries to put the make on our heroine, she walks out on him, only to find herself stranded in a one-horse town. As luck would have it, Jack is doing his magic act at the local opry house, bombing disastrously before a spectacularly unenthusiastic audience. Mary secretly arranges to take the place of Jack's current partner. The act is a hit once more, prompting Jack to ask Mary to be his teammate again -- both onstage and off.
