Frances Heflin Movies
Fans of the long-running ABC soap opera All My Children will immediately recognize actress Frances Heflin for having played Mona Kane, the ever-patient mother of vixen Erica Kane. The Emmy-wining Heflin played the role from the show's inception in 1970 through her death in 1994. The sister of late movie star Van Heflin, she started out on stage. Her other television credits include a role on The House on High Street (1959). She appeared twice in feature films. She was married to composer Sol Kaplan. Bertholt Brecht (1898-1956) was a groundbreaking German playwright, movie-maker, and poet. Among his well-known works are the musical drama The Threepenny Opera (which originated the famous song Mack the Knife in collaboration with composer Kurt Weill), and the harrowing drama Mother Courage and Her Children, which have become part of the world's standard theatrical repertory. Due to his leftist political sympathies, despite his eminent stature in Germany, he decided to live the life of an exile in the United States between 1941 and 1947. This documentary explores that period in his life. While in the U.S., he supported himself by writing screenplays such as the one he wrote with Charles Laughton for Galileo Galilei). His leftist sentiments and intense idealism brought him into conflict with the increasingly hysterical anti-communist activities of branches of the U.S. government. When he was brought before the House Un-American Activities Committee (H.U.A.C.) to testify, along with other culturally influential men such as Ring Lardner, Jr., he was unable to adequately defend himself. This grim historical drama from director Martin Ritt was loosely based on real-life events. Richard Harris stars as James McParlan, an operative for the Pinkerton Detective Agency in 1876. The Pinkertons have been hired by a major coal company to infiltrate and expose an underground terrorist organization, the "Molly Maguires," operating within the impoverished mining communities of Pennsylvania. As most of the miners are Irish, the recently emigrated McParlan is selected to pose as a new worker just arrived in the area. He quickly wins the trust and loyalty of the local terrorist leader, Jack Kehoe (Sean Connery), as well as the affection of his landlord's beautiful daughter, Mary Raines (Samantha Eggar). As it becomes clear that the group he's supposed to betray is protesting truly wretched working conditions, the lawman's loyalties become divided between the law and his fellow countrymen.
