Edward Hearn Movies
Actor Edward Hearn's Hollywood career extended from 1916 to 1951. A leading man in the silent era, Hearn was seen in such roles as Philip Nolan, the title character in Man without a Country (1925). His first talkie effort was Frank Capra's The Donovan Affair (1929). Capra never forgot Hearn, securing minor roles for the actor when his star faded in the early 1930s. Edward Hearn spent his last two decades in films playing dozens of cops, jurors, and military officers, essaying bits in features and supporting roles in serials and short subjects. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie GuideAlthough Anita Stewart receives top billing in this action picture, it's Edward Hearn who has the more prominent role. Bill Shannon (Hearn) is building a dam in the mountains of the West. Leon Morse, a Wall Street millionaire and railroad magnate (Arthur Stewart Hull), wants the same land as a right-of-way for his railroad. He travels West to negotiate with Shannon, bringing along his fiancée, Anne Wilmot (Stewart), and her Aunt Katherine (Adele Farrington). The trip proves to be Morse's undoing in several ways -- Anne immediately falls in love with Shannon, who is not terribly cooperative about handing over the land. After his offer to Shannon is turned down, Morse plants a bomb to blow up the dam. Anne is the one who saves the day by disconnecting the bomb's wire. It is a tale known well, filmed many times over the years, but never better than this early black and white version from the MGM Studios, David O. Selznick producing. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times"-- Charles Dickens juxtaposes England and France, George and Louis, tradition and revolution. One of the most beloved of Dickens' stories, finding not only countries and conditions compared, but also two individuals thrown up in stark contrast to one another: -- the dissolute barrister Sydney Carton (Ronald Colman) and the young, somewhat callow aristocrat Charles Darnay (Donald Woods), both in love with Lucie (Elizabeth Allan), daughter of a victim of the French Regime. Their lives intertwine until the violent revolution that overtook an entire nation engulfs them all as well.
Dickens' story has stood the test of time; remade frequently since the release of this1935 version. It is this version by director Jack Conway's that is best remembered and to which all others are compared. The settings, cinematography, and direction are all right on the mark, recreating the streets of London and of Paris with great skill and realism. The supporting cast, filled with faces we have grown to cherish-- Reginald Owen, Edna May Oliver, Claude Gillingwater, Walter Catlett, H. B. Warner, Basil Rathbone, and E. E. Clive-comes through with crystalline performances which add substance to the inexorable stream of events. Blanche Yurka's bravura turn as Therese de Farge delights us even as we shudder at her intensity. Second unit directors Jacques Tourneur and Val Lewton, who would both go on to memorable careers as leading directors in their own right, staged the storming of the Bastille and other "revolutionary" scenes brilliantly, managing to combine fervor with panache. It is, however, Colman's portrayal of the lonely man redeemed by love and sacrifice which stands at the center of the story.
Sydney Carton first saves Charles Darnay from a charge of treason, thereby meeting those who care for him: the beautiful Lucie Manette, her father, Doctor Manette (Henry B. Walthall), released from the Bastille after many years of unjust incarceration; Lucie's servant Miss Pross, (Oliver) and Mister Lorry (Claude Gillingwater), an functionary of Tellson's Bank. His relationship with this circle of kind friends grows rocky when Darnay marries Lucie, whom Carton has loved from afar, but even this turn of events cannot change his feelings for them all and he grows to love them even more when daughter Lucie comes along. He reforms, leaving old ways behind and enjoying a familial warmth he has never known. This happy life is shattered when Darnay returns to France during the first revolutionary struggles, intent on saving his old tutor from the guillotine. He soon finds himself behind bars and facing the blade instead. The Revolution does not forget an aristocrat, even one who has recanted and lived life abroad as a commoner. The whole family makes the channel crossing to come to the young man's aid and Carton seeks a way to save him, discovering only one path to free Darnay and return everyone to safety. It is a sacrifice easily promised and quickly made.
Ronald Colman had long wanted to make a film of this story and, when he finally got his chance, he happily shaved off his signature mustache in an appropriate gesture to historical realism. Reviews of his work indicate his portrayal of Sydney Carton surpassed all his previous endeavors; he had been accused of walking through light parts, once he started making "talkies," and not putting his many talents to good use. "A Tale of Two Cities" put rest to those complaints. He dominates completely the scenes he which he does appear, and his skill gives substance to a literary achievement, a melancholy man of intelligence and wit, given to drink and despair, whose life seems to attain meaning only when it is given up for someone else. Set in wartime (WW II), this film finds the fat guy, skinny guy comedy duo not much good at any attempted professions; they can't even enlist in the war effort. None of the services want them. But they do become air raid wardens, at least for a while, until their misadventures continue. They get all boozed up and are kicked off the air raid squad, too! But things get better when they thwart a spy ring and save the day. ~ All Movie Guide
Gladys Walton is the self-reliant heroine of All Dolled Up. A humble salesgirl, she comes to the rescue of wealthy Florence Turner when the latter is victimized by pickpockets and blackmailers. Literally pummelling the crooks into insensibility, Walton earns a million dollar reward. Though she rises to the top of the social ladder, she remains as likeable and down-to-earth as ever. All Dolled Up was the sort of fare that was eagerly lapped up by all the shopgirls and clerks in the audience, who believed that "There but for the grace of the screenwiter..." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Three years after the second Thin Man entry, MGM brought back the property by popular demand with Another Thin Man. As ever, William Powell and Myrna Loy star as sophisticated sleuths Nick and Nora Charles, with the added filip of 8-month-old Nick Charles Jr. At the invitation of munitions manufacturer Colonel MacFay (C. Aubrey Smith), the Charleses spend a weekend at MacFay's Long Island estate. The Colonel is certain that his shady ex-business associate Phil Church (Sheldon Leonard) plans to do him harm, a prognostication that apparently comes true when murder rears its ugly head. Though he's promised to cut down on his drinking (after all, he's a daddy now), Nick spends an inordinate amount of time sorting out the clues and identifying the actual murderer-who, of course, is the least likely suspect (and in fact is played by an actor who seldom if ever harmed a fly in any other film). Adding to the merry mayhem is the Charleses' efforts to find a good baby-sitter, resulting in an onslaught of "help"-and additional babies!--courtesy of Nick's old Underworld cronies. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Originally titled It Ain't No Sin until the censors prevailed, then St. Louis Woman and Belle of New Orleans, until complaints were registered from those two communities, Belle of the Nineties was Mae West's first post-Production Code film. West is cast as cabaret entertainer Ruby Carter, plying her trade along the Mississippi. Having no trouble surviving on her own terms in a man's world, Ruby fends off the unwarranted attentions of a steady stream of libidinous males, reserving her affections for a muscular boxer called The Tiger Kid (Roger Pryor). In keeping with the star's casual liberality, a number of black entertainers and athletes are given ample opportunities in this film, notably Duke Ellington and His Orchestra. The surest sign that the Code had "tamed" West a bit is the fact that she actually marries the hero at film's end. In an attempt to broaden his image, former Fox cowboy Buck Jones both produced and starred in this silent aviation melodrama. Jones plays Buck Bronson, a ranch hand taking to the air as a barnstorming pilot. Lovely June Halloway, in love with Buck, persuades her wealthy father (Charles Clary) to enter the inexperienced aviator in the Honolulu airplane race. Villainous Ben Barnett (Ernest Hilliard), infatuated with June, drugs Buck's pilot friend (Edward Hearn) right before the race, hoping that Buck's inexperience will prove fatal. The novice aviator does crash along the way, but he is rescued and returns to beat the villain and win the girl. The latter was played by Jobyna Ralston, a 1923 WAMPAS Baby Star who was comedian Harold Lloyd's leading lady in no less than six classic comedies. The only film produced by Jones until a series of low-budget Westerns for Universal in the mid 1930s, The Big Hop came complete with sound effects. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide

Bob Hope plays a famous movie star who does his best to avoid the pre-war draft, but ends up in uniform all the same. Hope marries Dorothy Lamour, the daughter of Army colonel Clarence Kolb, in hopes that this union will help him sidestep military service. Stuck in boot camp, Hope is a class-A screw-up until redeeming himself during a sham battle--though his "heroic" commandeering of a tank began as yet another boo-boo. Still not entirely certain that Hope could carry a film by himself, Paramount teamed him with Eddie Bracken and Lynne Overman--a sort of Abbott and Costello plus One. Despite the efforts to make Bob Hope part of an ensemble, it is clear from the first frame to the last who is truly the star of Caught in the Draft. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In the first of eight Hoot Gibson Westerns produced by poverty row company Allied, The Hooter sets out to avenge the murder of his brother (Edward Hearn), the town banker. Pretending to have no interest in revenge, Gibson is derided for cowardice. Unbeknownst to the townsfolk, however, the young man masquerades as "El Capitan," a notorious Mexican bandit at night, righting the wrongs done by Hooper Atchley, the man he suspects of killing his brother in the first place. Like in Gibson Westerns of yore, none of the derring-do was meant to be taken too seriously. And although cheap-looking compared to The Hooter's silent Universal Westerns, the Allied series at least gave the star more autonomy. Gibson main demand was that his then-wife, Sally Eilers, be cast in the female lead, a decision producer M.H. Hoffman had good reason to celebrate when the beautiful starlet became an overnight sensation in the Fox melodrama Bad Girl (1931). ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide

Cashing in on the popularity of such pro-Native American films as Broken Arrow, Columbia's resident quickiemeister Sam Katzman came up with Conquest of Cochise. John Hodiak plays the eponymous Apache leader, who at the beginning of the film is seen conducting raids on the U.S.-Mexican border in the company of the Comanches. Eventually realizing that the whites are better armed and equipped than the Indians, Cochise wants to put an end to the raids and smoke the peace pipe, but the Comanches don't see things his way. In films of this nature, there is usually a foredoomed love affair between a white man and an Indian girl. This time, however, Cochise falls in love with Mexican aristocrat Consuelo de Cordova (Joy Page), whom he holds hostage while U.S. cavalry officer Burke (Robert Stack) searches for the killer of Cochise's Indian bride. Director William Castle does a nice job matching stock footage with his newly-shot scenes. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Celebrated prize fighter Jack Dempsey was a natural for serials, and industry leader Pathé dutifully cast him in this 15-chapter Western adventure co-starring cowgirl Josie Sedgwick and directed by a young W.S. Van Dyke. The story was the usual chapterplay predicament: A dying father gives his young daughter, Glory (Sedgwick), a bracelet with a gem that contains a partial direction to an underground lake of oil. The other half of the secret is in the possession of James Meeney (Frederick Starr), a gangster who may or may not be working with the girl's greedy stepfather (Herschel Mayall) and brother (Albert Cody). Enter Jack Derry (Dempsey), whose father (Carl Stockdale) is wrongfully imprisoned for a crime actually committed by Royce Rivers (Lon Chaney), a desert rat in league with Meeney. Everything, of course, is cleared up in the final chapter, "The Triple Chase," as Jack not only proves his father's innocence but also wins the affection of the newly oil-rich Glory. Promised a bonus if he could complete each chapter within a week, director W.S. Van Dyke earned a lifelong reputation for speed and efficiency (as well as the nickname "One-Shot Van Dyke") by working his cast and crew furiously but without skimping on quality. On the verge of major stardom, Lon Chaney did double duty in Daredevil Jack as a supporting player and as Dempsey's makeup man, and according to Dempsey, performing the latter duties with "a feather-like touch." One of Hollywood's few cowgirls, Josie Sedgwick, starred as the lady mayor of a small Western community in this silent oater released by Universal. There was an obligatory hero, of course (the mayor of the neighboring community), but Sedgwick never appeared less than capable of standing up to even toughest of lawbreakers in the hell-fire frontier town of Eden. From a family of vaudeville actors, the somewhat mannish-looking Sedgwick had begun her screen career in the mid 1910s with the old Triangle Company, reaching stardom in Universal Western 2-reelers of the early 1920s. ~ Hans J. Like many other pictures in the 1920s, Daughters of Today depicted the dangers that could befall those who led a jazz lifestyle -- in graphic detail, of course, which only served to make jazz all the more appealing. Edna Murphy stars as Mabel Vandergrift, a country girl who convinces her old-fashioned parents (George Nichols and Gertrude Claire) that she should attend a fashionable college in the city. There she falls in with a jazz crowd led by Lois Whittall (Patsy Ruth Miller), a motherless rich girl whose father (Phillips Smalley) has his own jazzy sweetheart. In spite of the wild parties she attends, which feature such activities as strip poker and revelers running around in their underwear, Mabel is really a good girl. When Reggy Adams (Philo McCullough) tries to force himself on her, she rebuffs him. But then Adams is found dead and Mabel is accused of his murder. Her friends try to protect her old ma from discovering the trouble she is in, and eventually her name is cleared. This domestic drama played up the hard-working secretary versus lazy wife scenario. Ruth Holt (Derelys Perdue) is the capable secretary, who is far more of a helpmate to architect Elwood Adams (Wyndham Standing) than his indolent wife, Francine (Grace Darmond). The lazy Francine spends her days going through Adams' money and enjoying the questionable attentions of lounge lizard Larry Gilfeather (Kenneth Gibson). Ruth, meanwhile, keeps a close eye on Adams' work and keeps his firm from falling apart. One day, in the midst of a business crisis, Adams has to introduce Ruth to banker Amos Martin (William Conklin) as his wife. Gilfeather informs Francine of this and she causes Ruth no small amount of grief. Francine comes close to ruining her husband's business, but Ruth helps the warring couple reconcile. A remake of Frank Capra's Submarine (1928), Devil's Playground is a snappy Columbia "B plus" picture starring Richard Dix and Chester Morris. Submarine officers Dorgan (Dix) and Mason (Morris) battle on land for the affections of dance-hall girl Carmen (Dolores del Rio). She marries Dorgan but makes a play for Mason when her husband is on duty. The romantic rivalry is forgotten when Dorgan must rescue

Directed by Billy Wilder and adapted from a James M. Cain novel by Wilder and Raymond Chandler, Double Indemnity represents the high-water mark of 1940s film noir urban crime dramas in which a greedy, weak man is seduced and trapped by a cold, evil woman amidst the dark shadows and Expressionist lighting of modern cities. Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck) seduces insurance agent Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) into murdering her husband to collect his accident policy. The murder goes as planned, but after the couple's passion cools, each becomes suspicious of the other's motives. The plan is further complicated when Neff's boss Barton Keyes (Edward G. Robinson), a brilliant insurance investigator, takes over the investigation. Told in flashbacks from Neff's perspective, the film moves with ruthless determinism as each character meets what seems to be a preordained fate. Movie veterans Stanwyck, MacMurray, and Robinson give some of their best performances, and Wilder's cynical sensibility finds a perfect match in the story's unsentimental perspective, heightened by John Seitz's hard-edged cinematography. Any movie that teams Robert Armstrong with Jean Arthur is certainly worth at least one look. Armstrong plays Chester Binney, a small-town rube who hopes to impress local beauty Ethel Simmons (Arthur). Aware that Ethel is ga-ga about "men of the world," Chester invents a shady past for himself and poses as a citified roue. He is forced to prove the veracity of his fabricated past when movie queen Letta Lardo (Lola Lane) shows up in town for a location shoot. Our hero is rescued from making a total fool of himself when it turns out that his rival (Jason Robards Sr.) for Ethel's affections turns out to be an even bigger phoney-baloney than he is. Ex-Bad Boy is based on John Emerson and Anita Loos' stage play The Whole Town's Talking (which ironically served as the title for an unrelated 1935 film, likewise co-starring Jean Arthur). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Nila Lyons (Laura La Plante) is a suburban housewife who craves excitement in her life. She gets it -- and how! -- when she's kidnapped by an Egyptian potentate. Crammed into a mummy case, Nila is rescued at the last possible moment by her "dull" husband Hiram (William Welsh). He then reveals that her abduction was a hoax, staged to cure her of her desire for thrills. Nila then responds by ramming Hiram's head upside his body, but this was a 1920s comedy, so all is forgiven. The plot of Excitement wasn't new in 1924 -- it had previously been employed, with variations, by Doug Fairbanks and Harold Lloyd -- and it certainly wouldn't be the last such "teach 'em a lesson" escapade, as witness such talkie two-reelers as Our Gang's Shiver My Timbers (1931) and Harry Von Zell's Meet Mr. Mischief (1947). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Frances Farmer plays the daughter of an honest and ethical newspaper publisher (Charlie Ruggles). She wants to become a reporter herself, but when her Dad refuses to give her an easy break, Frances goes to work for a rival "tell all" tabloid. Her irresponsible reporting causes a highly respected citizen to commit suicide, and also loses her the respect of her father. But when Frances gets "over her head" in tracking down a killer, her father comes to the rescue. Taking a bullet meant for his daughter, Ruggles dies in her arms, but not before advising her in how to report this late-breaking event: "Write it simply and clearly and keep the paragraphs short." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

After being given the "Hollywood treatment," author Johan Bojer's famed novel changed from a story of breadth and scope into a trite domestic drama. Harold Mark, a country doctor (Edward Hearn), falls in love with Thora (Barbara Bedford), who lives with her crippled grandfather (Harry Duffield). Mark cures the grandfather and he and Thora marry. They move to the city, but after Mark earns a scholarship, he gets wrapped up with a radical movement. It takes time away from both his studies and his marriage. Thora, starved for attention, falls prey to Monsieur Duparc, a charismatic sculptor (Lloyd Whitlock). She leaves Mark and goes to live with Duparc's aunt. Mark, meanwhile, becomes disillusioned with his radical friends and eventually becomes the head of a hospital. Thora realizes that she does not want to spend her life with Duparc and tells him so. He drives to see Mark, but is involved in a car accident. Duparc is brought into the hospital and Mark saves his life. Mark and Thora are finally reconciled. ~ Janiss Garza, All Movie Guide

This was one of a cycle of faith-healing films of the late teens and early '20s. A Scottish teacher (J. Parks Jones) cures those around him with equal parts faith and common sense. His son (Edward Hearn) is in love with the daughter (Peggy Hyland) of the town's richest man. He opposes his daughter's romance until the teacher saves the girl from the brink of death. Although the Christian Science movement strongly supported films of this nature, they weren't overwhelmingly popular with mass audiences, and the trend died out after Harold Lloyd's Dr. Jack. Fast Company was another attempt by MGM to match the success of its "Thin Man" films. Melvyn Douglas and Florence Rice star as Joel and Garda Sloane, the funloving rare-book dealers created by Harry Kurnitz. Try as they might, the Sloanes can't help getting involved in crime and murder. This time around, the couple searches for a con artist who has been ripping off the insurance companies by staging robberies of phony first editions. When murder rears its ugly head, Joel and Garda have four suspects to choose from, at least three of whom look incredibly guilty. Without providing any clues as to the outcome, it can be noted that the supporting cast includes such past masters of skullduggery as Louis Calhern, Douglass Dumbrille, George Zucco and Dwight Frye. Fast Company was the first of three "Joel and Garda Sloane" efforts, each one starring different actors in the leading roles. Having starred in two earlier Westerns produced by Harry S. Webb, Tom Tyler signed with Webb's new company Reliable, where the former silent star went on to make 18 inexpensive but well-made oaters. The first in the series, Fighting Hero, cast Tyler as Tom Hall, a fugitive from justice rescuing a young Mexican woman, Conchita (Renee Borden), from a murder conviction. He falls in love with the girl, but he then overhears her apparently plotting with the leader of a gang of stage-robbers. As it turns out, Conchita is only looking out for Tom's welfare, and with her help he is soon able to apprehend the gang. When the sheriff (Tom London) arrives, Tom reveals himself to be an undercover agent for the Wells Fargo Company. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide

In his second starring Western for low-budget producer Willis Kent, former All-American fullback Reb Russell played just that, a former football star for Northwestern. He is also a detective for the Cattlemen's Association, assigned to look into a series of cattle rustlings. Posing as a cowboy, Reb makes the acquaintance with Big Jack Thorpe (Yakima Canutt), another football veteran, and together they unmask saloon keeper Lenihan (Edward Hearn) as the leader of the rustlers, saving lovely Lucille (Lucille Lund) from a fate worse than death along the way. ~ Hans J.
