Jon Avnet directs Al Pacino in the thriller 88 Minutes. Pacino plays university professor Jack Gramm, who occasionally assists the FBI in matters of forensic psychiatry. His recent testimony against a freshly convicted criminal seems to be the reason he has gotten a scary phone call informing him he will die in 88 minutes. As with the like-minded thriller D.O.A. (both the original and the remake), the protagonist must use his skills in order to track down who has hatched this evil plot and hopefully prevent his own demise. Alicia Witt and Leelee Sobieski co-star as the professor's star students. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

Adapted from the popular Sega arcade video game of the same name, director Uwe Boll's action horror effort finds a group of partying teens stranded on an island and doing battle with a new breed of unusually mobile zombies. Looking for a place to party away spring break, college students Cynthia (Sonya Salomaa), Greg (Will Sanderson), and Karma (Enuka Okuma) hear rumors of a rave on a remote island in the Seattle area. Rushing to catch the party boat, the teens pick up friends Simon (Tyron Leitso) and Alicia (Ona Grauer), but discover upon arrival at the dock that the boat has set sail without them. Offering a few dollars to a local captain to hitch a ride to the island, the teens reach their destination only to find it eerily silent with no party in sight. Things go from bad to worse when the group is attacked by a mysterious creature, and they are forced to seek refuge in an old dark house on the island shore. Subsequently running into a few familiar faces and learning to their horror that the rave had been overrun by a horde of terrifying zombies, the group must now make one final bid for survival over the course of a long, blood-soaked night. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

A physician who helps his clients bring new life into the world is accused of an ethical breach that's also criminal in this independent drama. Dr. Freeman (Colm Feore) is a doctor who runs an upscale fertility clinic in Las Vegas, Nevada. Freeman specializes in helping women who have had trouble getting pregnant conceive, usually through artificial insemination techniques or transplanting donated eggs into his patients. Over the course of several weeks, Freeman inseminates nine women from different walks of life, ranging from middle-aged but newly married Lottie (Andie MacDowell) and a lesbian whose reproductive clock is ticking, Elsa (Donna D'Errico) to Frances (Geraldine Chaplin), an aging socialite who needs a son to inherit her husband's fortune and sassy, outspoken Salome (Jennifer Tilly). Of these nine women, eight become pregnant and give birth to healthy children, but when the new mothers compare notes, they discover their children bear a striking resemblance to one another. When journalist Tallulah (Elizabeth McGovern) looks into their story, they begin to suspect that Freeman used his own sperm to fertilize his patients rather than the donor samples they selected, a breach of conduct that lands the doctor in court. Inconceivable also stars Kerry Fox, Amanda Plummer and Colin Mochrie; Geraldine Chaplin's daughter Oona Chaplin co-stars as Frances's grown daughter. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Inspired by actual events, Canadian filmmaker Damon Vignale's Leo-nominated supernatural thriller tells the tale of a kidnapped drug dealer who miraculously manages to escape his abductors, and the connection that police begin to make between what appears to be a typical street crime, and a 16th Century case of demonic possession involving a renowned exorcist and a French nun. Sister Madeline was an early-16th Century nun from Aix-en-Provence, France who had been overtaken by an entity that, when confronted by veteran exorcist Father Sebastien Michaelis, revealed itself to be a fallen angel on a mission to punish sinners and tempt the innocent. At the time, Father Michaelis wrote extensively about his battle against that unholy spirit, and now, 400 years later, his writings may prove the key to solving a disturbing modern-day mystery. Ryan James is a drug dealer who has just survived a close brush with death. After being kidnapped and bound, the street-smart dope slinger somehow managed to break free of his bonds and stage a daring escape. Now terrified that his kidnappers will return to complete the mission they failed to carry out the first time around, a desperate James contacts the local police in hopes that they can somehow help to save his life. Having worked in the city for many years, strong-willed detective Jen Porhowski thinks she has heard it all. Upon hearing James' fantastical account of his harrowing struggle, however, Jen skeptically tries to make sense of the story by separating the hard facts from perceived fiction. But sometimes there's a greater truth at work, and now as the pair begin to discover Father Michaelis' centuries-old writings they quickly learn that this modern kidnapping case may in fact transcend their reality and have implications that reach back through the centuries. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
