Based on the novel by Jane Austen (who in the '90s seemed to be in the running alongside William Shakespeare and Stephen King for the honors of most adapted author in Hollywood), this period romantic comedy stars Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma Woodhouse, a young woman who imagines herself an authority on matters of the heart. With the best of intentions, Emma plays matchmaker for her friends, most notably her friend Harriet (Toni Collette), who Emma links up with the Reverend Elton (Alan Cumming), and her governess, (Greta Scacchi), who she introduces to her future husband, Mr. Weston (James Cosmo). However, Emma is not nearly as good at playing Cupid as she likes to imagine, and she spends so much time trying to solve everyone else's romantic problems that it takes her quite some time to realize that she's fallen in love with Mr. Knightly (Jeremy Northam). A television miniseries based on Austen's book appeared a year later, while a year prior to Emma, the story appeared in modernized form in the popular teen comedy Clueless. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Bille August directed this film version of the Isabel Allende novel, featuring a cast that includes Jeremy Irons, Meryl Streep, and Glenn Close. The story is a sweeping and brooding melodrama, spanning generations and filled with violence, revenge, and telekinesis. The tale begins in South America in 1926, when a young man, Esteban (Jeremy Irons), falls in love with the daughter of a rich man, Rosa Del Valle (Teri Polo). He vows to become rich enough to make her his wife and spends months of toil in the gold fields to earn enough money to do just that. Before the two marry, however, Rosa is killed by poison meant for her father. After the tragedy, Esteban moves to Trés Marias, an abandoned ranch, and spends 20 years of his life turning the ranch into a thriving estate, exploiting the labor of the poor who live off the land. When he returns to the city, he comes across Rosa's younger sister Clara (Meryl Streep), now a woman with telekinetic abilities. Clara took a vow of silence years before, but upon the arrival of Esteban, she speaks for the first time in years -- "You have come to propose marriage to me," she says. Esteban and Clara marry, and Esteban takes her back to the ranch, where they have a daughter, Blanca (Winona Ryder). Their daughter falls in love with the son of one of Esteban's foremen, a hot-headed revolutionary named Pedro (Antonio Banderas). Now, the country is in the throes of revolution. Esteban banishes his sister Ferula (Glenn Close) from the ranch, beats his wife, and rapes a peasant woman. The product of Esteban's rape (Joaquin Martinez) grows into an angry young man who convinces Esteban to send him away to military school. Widower Edouard Pierson (Jeremy Irons) fought for Australia in World War Two, but he was born (and married) in Belgium. For the past twelve years, he has been living in Australia with his daughter. His occupation as a wool merchant is in keeping with his family's tradition. He is determined to remain in Australia, and is equally determined to keep his daughter (Danielle Lyttleton) from learning much about her mother, whom she never knew. Nonetheless, when his brother (Tcheky Karyo) calls urgently from Belgium, requesting his help in saving the family's business there, he returns to his hometown of Verviers. In addition to saving the family business, he comes to have second thoughts about returning to Australia after he has a brief affair with a Belgian woman (Fanny Ardant). TheTV movie Jack the Ripper endeavors to shed new light on one of the most notorious unsolved cases in history. The Ripper, of course, was the London serial killer who, in 1888, killed and disemboweled five prostitutes. Michael Caine stars not as the Ripper but as a Scotland-Yard inspector who is assigned to the case. The trail of evidence leads Caine to some astonishing suspects--including at least one member of the Royal Family. As the public clamors for an arrest in the case of the unsolved evisceration murders of five East End prostitutes, Abberline narrows down his list of suspects: the four most likely to have committed the murders, according to the inspector, are American-actor Richard Mansfield (Armand Assante), Queen Victoria's personal psychic (Ken Bones), a certain Dr. Acland (Richard Morant) and socialist-gadfly Lusk (Michael Gothard). The British government is also pressuring Abberline to produce the killer. In the 12th episode of the season-long continuity "The Trial of a Time Lord," the Valeyard (Michael Jayston), bent upon condemning the Doctor (Colin Baker) for violating the Laws of Time, argues that the Doctor's videotaped evidence does not correspond with the facts. But the Doctor argues that, contrary to those "facts," he and his companion, Mel (Bonnie Langford), were indeed responsible for rescuing the passengers of the spaceliner Hyperion III from being devoured by a series of ravenous plants -- and that the Hyperion III did not meet its doom in the Black Hole of Tartarus. The season-long Doctor Who adventure "The Trial of a Time Lord" continued on November 1, 1986 with episode one of the story's third chapter, "Terror of the Vervoids" (a subtitle that did not appear onscreen). Still defending himself against charges of breaking the Laws of Time, the Doctor (Colin Baker) presents videotaped evidence of his innocence. It should not surprise fans of the series that the evidence consists of events that have yet to transpire, and that the Doctor has suddenly acquired a new companion: Earth girl Melanie "Mel" Bush (Bonnie Langford). The two-part British miniseries Wynne and Penkovsky was based on the true story of a Soviet G.R.U. colonel who worked as an undercover agent for the U.S. and Britain from 1960 to 1962. Until his arrest, Oleg V. Penkovksy (here played by Christopher Rozycki) was at the center of several volatile political incidents, and had been credited with providing the intelligence necessary for the Allies' successful maneuverings during the Berlin and Cuban Missile crises. Of the many books written about Penkovsky's activities, the best-known was The Man From Moscow by former British intelligence operative Greville Wynne (played by David Calder), who served as the Russian mole's contact man and go-between. It was Wynne's volume that served as the principal source for Wynne and Penkovsky, which first aired in the U.K. on January 2, 1985. The British drama series Within These Walls chronicled the lives of those unfortunate souls incarcerated in Stone Park, a tough woman's prison. Running four years and 52 episodes, the series was on long enough to require the services of three different female wardens, each with her own penal methods and personal hangups: Faye Boswell (Googie Withers), Helen Forrester (Katherine Blake), and Susan Marshall (Sarah Lawson). At the time of its original airing, the series stirred up both controversy and praise for its unstinting realism, though by 21st century standards it was rather restrained. This docu-drama purports to be a serious examination of the trendy pastime of spouse swapping. A deadly serious American psychologist introduces and discusses each segment. In the first one, a wife is forced to disrobe and swim to a houseboat where she must stay for an entire night. In the second sequence, a sexually frustrated couple find the satisfaction they crave with another couple. The wife is most reluctant but it doesn't take her long to become addicted to other men.
