Tony Hawk Movies
When Tony Hawk entered the professional skateboarding circuit in 1982 at the age of 14, few people in the world of extreme sports would have guessed he would become an icon; however, Hawk's decision to quit playing baseball -- which, considering his father's position as the president of his Little League chapter, was no easy choice -- ultimately landed Hawk at the top of the sport and allowed him to "retire" in 1999 at the ripe old age of 31. As Hawk rapidly gained credibility among his peers in the sport, he also received no small amount of attention from television and video producers. Interestingly enough, Hawk appeared as an extra (skateboarding, of course) in Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol in 1997; more importantly, however, his skill helped put the X Games into the mainstream. In addition to a wide variety of Hawk-inspired video games, the athlete has made countless appearances on ESPN and was featured in over 50 skateboarding documentaries and instructional titles during the '80s and '90s. Along the way, he became somewhat of a pop culture icon. MTV's Diary series featured Hawk as one of its subjects, and he was voted Best Male Athlete of the Year at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, beating out other famous sports figures including Tiger Woods and basketball star Shaquille O'Neal. In 2002, Hawk appeared alongside fellow skateboarder Bam Margera in Jackass: The Movie, and later that year could be seen in XXX with Vin Diesel. In 2004, Hawk hosted Tony Hawk's Secret Skatepark Tour, which chronicled his surprise appearances at skateparks throughout the United States. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie GuideSkateboarding exploits featuring bowl, streetstyle and ramp methods. ~ All Movie Guide

Three young skaters desperate to drop out of suburbia and land a sponsor defy the rules to take part in skateboard legend Tony Hawk's beach-bowl competition in an ollie-popping, rail-sliding tale that shows just how far a little determination and a healthy dose of persistence can go in life. As word spreads through the suburbs that 12-time world champion skater Hawk is making the rounds to scout for upcoming talent, three skilled young street sharks who know they have what it takes to make the cut vow to enter the competition at any cost. Their bid for skateboard stardom hits a notable roadblock, however, when the trio learns that not only is the competition miles away, but that their desperate determination to succeed is only exceeded by the determination of their disapproving parents and teachers to ensure that they don't venture outside of the neighborhood. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

In the mid-'70s, skateboarding was widely seen as a fad of the 1960s that had all but died out, except for a handful of committed fans in California. But that began to change with the emerge of the Z-Boys, a team of teenaged skateboarders who emerged from a decaying urban community in Santa Monica, CA. Hard-core surfers who sought to translate the hot-dogging stunts of world-class wave riders onto their skateboards began hanging out at the Zephyr Productions Surf Shop, a store that stocked top-grade equipment for local surfers and skaters, and with the help of the store's owner Jeff Ho, twelve of the skaters organized themselves into a team to compete at local skate events. Soon the radical moves and scruffy-streetwise style of the Zephyr Skate Team -- the Z-Boys for short -- upended public preconceptions of skateboarding as a sport and a lifestyle, and the wild style of Z-Boy skaters such as Tony Alva, Jim Muir, and Jay Adams made them celebrities who blazed the trail for the extreme sports movement. But while the Z-Boys' success brought them a measure of fame and fortune -- lucrative endorsement contracts, deals to manufacture their own custom skateboards, and even movie roles (Tony Alva starred opposite Leif Garrett in Skateboard, while Z-Boy Stacy Peralta was top-billed in Freewheelin') -- their fame proved to be fleeting, and several of the Z-Boys fell prey to drugs, crime, and ego. Dogtown and Z-Boys is a documentary by former Z-Boy Stacy Peralta that chronicles the glory days of the Z-Boys through footage of the skaters in their prime and interviews with the pioneers of the Southern California skate scene. Rock musicians and noted skate enthusiasts Ian MacKaye, Henry Rollins, and Jeff Ament also appear to discuss the importance of the Z-Boys' legacy; Sean Penn narrates. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Gleaming the Cube does for skateboarding what Over the Top did for arm wrestling -- i.e. not a hell of a lot. Christian Slater is the skateboarding star, playing Brian Kelly, a sneering and laconic teen outcast. He feels left out and envious of his adopted Vietnamese brother Vinh's (Art Chudabala) success as an honor roll student and as the center of attention in his family. When Vinh commits suicide, Brian is suspicious and rolls away on his skateboard to find out what really happened -- and ultimately to avenge his murder. Brian's investigation is aided and abetted by a sardonic detective named Al Lucero (Steven Bauer), a collection of skateboard aficionados, and an incredibly attractive Vietnamese girl, Tina (Min Luong). ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

The founding father of competitive skateboarding, Tony Hawk, and other professional skaters' performances at the 1999 Gravity Games are captured on this highlight video. The Gravity Games, an Olympic-style competition for extreme sports, were originally broadcast by NBC Sports as a response to the popularity of ESPN's X-Games. Held in Providence, Rhode Island, the 1999 competition had three skateboarding competitions: the vert competition, where skaters attempt to top each other and gain the highest point above the halfpipe rail; the halfpipe competition, judged much like gymnastics, where skaters perform difficult aerial tricks; and the downhill race, where skaters compete on a course much like a bobsled course, racing downhill against one another. Though the style of the video could be described as MTV-like with its editing cuts and modern rock music, the influence of the NBC Sports production style is undeniable in the overall presentation. The skater interviews are much like postgame questions presented to football players and the overall flow of the video moves like what one would expect from NBC's coverage of the traditional Olympics. The prime reason for watching the video remains the top-notch camera work and thrilling skateboard action! Several other competitions from the Gravity Games have also been released on video, including Gravity Games: Motocross and Gravity Games: Snowboarding. ~ Ed Atkinson, All Movie Guide
