When Tony Hawk entered the professional skateboarding circuit in 1982 at the age of 14, few people in the world of extreme sports would have guessed he would become an icon; however, Hawk's decision to quit playing baseball -- which, considering his father's position as the president of his Little League chapter, was no easy choice -- ultimately landed Hawk at the top of the sport and allowed him to "retire" in 1999 at the ripe old age of 31. As Hawk rapidly gained credibility among his peers in the sport, he also received no small amount of attention from television and video producers. Interestingly enough, Hawk appeared as an extra (skateboarding, of course) in Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol in 1997; more importantly, however, his skill helped put the X Games into the mainstream. In addition to a wide variety of Hawk-inspired video games, the athlete has made countless appearances on ESPN and was featured in over 50 skateboarding documentaries and instructional titles during the '80s and '90s. Along the way, he became somewhat of a pop culture icon. MTV's Diary series featured Hawk as one of its subjects, and he was voted Best Male Athlete of the Year at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, beating out other famous sports figures including Tiger Woods and basketball star Shaquille O'Neal. In 2002, Hawk appeared alongside fellow skateboarder Bam Margera in Jackass: The Movie, and later that year could be seen in XXX with Vin Diesel. In 2004, Hawk hosted Tony Hawk's Secret Skatepark Tour, which chronicled his surprise appearances at skateparks throughout the United States. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

Starring Tony Hawk, Mike Vallely, Eric Kosten, and many others, this documentary follows the world's top skaters on a tour throughout Europe and the U.S. Stopping at various parks to do extreme skating demos for crowds reaching the thousands, the guys show off never-before-seen stunts. Mat Hoffman does a roof jump, Jason Ellis does a half-pipe transfer to a street course, and Bam Margera attempts a 20-foot bomb drop. In between skating events, like the Vans Big Air Show in France, the guys goof off in all manner of athletic adventures, including paintball, go carting, and ATV racing. The founding father of competitive skateboarding, Tony Hawk, and other professional skaters' performances at the 1999 Gravity Games are captured on this highlight video. The Gravity Games, an Olympic-style competition for extreme sports, were originally broadcast by NBC Sports as a response to the popularity of ESPN's X-Games. Held in Providence, Rhode Island, the 1999 competition had three skateboarding competitions: the vert competition, where skaters attempt to top each other and gain the highest point above the halfpipe rail; the halfpipe competition, judged much like gymnastics, where skaters perform difficult aerial tricks; and the downhill race, where skaters compete on a course much like a bobsled course, racing downhill against one another. Though the style of the video could be described as MTV-like with its editing cuts and modern rock music, the influence of the NBC Sports production style is undeniable in the overall presentation. The skater interviews are much like postgame questions presented to football players and the overall flow of the video moves like what one would expect from NBC's coverage of the traditional Olympics. The prime reason for watching the video remains the top-notch camera work and thrilling skateboard action!
