This beautifully rendered British animated version of Kenneth Grahame's enduring children's classic features the voices of Michael Gambon, Michael Palin, Alan Bennett and Rik Mayall; it is narrated by Vanessa Redgrave who frames the story while reading her children a bedtime story. The story is set beside an ever changing river that "always remains the same," and chronicles the adventures of the timid, unworldly Mole and the pragmatic dreamer Rat, as they embark on Mole's first trip into the great river. There they have many fun and scary times encountering such characters as the menacing Badger and the outrageous, carefree Mr. Toad. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

A followup to the 1995 animated special Mole's Christmas, The Adventures of Mole is one of a series of hour-long, British-made cartoons based on Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows. In this one, the shy, bookish Mole develops a thirst for excitement. Accompanied by his new friend Rat, excitement is just what he finds, with stopovers at the homes of his compatriots Toad and Badger. Reportedly first telecast on Britain's Channel 4, The Adventures of Mole was given its official US debut over cable's Disney Channel on May 7, 1996, and was nominated for a Cable Ace Award. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Former Monty Python members Terry Jones, Eric Idle, John Cleese, and Michael Palin were reunited by director Jones for this live-action adaptation of the 1908 children's fantasy classic by Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932). The actors have only slight physical changes to suggest animal characteristics, plus tails protruding from their Edwardian-style costumes. In pre-WW I England, fascist Weasels prowl the countryside, forcing modest Mole (Steve Coogan) from his underground home after the Weasels acquire the meadow from wealthy, waddling Mr. Toad (Jones). Toad's inheritance is leaking away because of his fascination with the recently invented motorcar. After Mole takes shelter with refined Rat (Idle), the two set out for Toad's cavernous mansion. Toad crashes into another vehicle, but unfortunately, his attorney (Cleese) has nothing nice to say in Toad's defense. Toad's behavior in court prompts the judge (Stephen Fry) to give him a century-long jail sentence. Rat and Mole plan to spring Toad with the help of the hibernating Badger (Nicol Williamson), but Toad simultaneously puts his own escape plan into motion. Back at Toad Hall, the Weasels construct a dog-food factory and intend to destroy the main house by blowing it up-so the threatened animals make plans to retake Toad Hall.

Crew members who worked on past Python films include James Acheson (production/costume design) and John Du Prez (original music and songs). Lawrence Van Gelder (New York Times) reviewed, "The Wind in the Willows, brimming with verbal and visual wit and imagination, driven by high adventure, reveling in English eccentricity, enlivened by bursts of song, unafraid of ideas and filled with color and splendid performances, exposes most other movies intended to attract children as out-and-out pap." This film should not be confused with the 1996 animated adaptation which also has Michael Palin in the cast. Filmed at Burnham Beeches (in Buckinghamshire, England). Other earlier versions: the second half of Disney's animated The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949); live-action by the Minneapolis Children's Theatre (1983); stop-motion animation for British TV (1983); 1982 stop-motion animation by John Semper (Spider-Man); and Rankin-Bass animation for U.S. TV (1987). ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

For many aficionados of Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows, the definitive film version was seen in Disney's omnibus animated feature Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949). Even so, this 1983 British adaptation is every bit as accomplished and worthwhile as the Disney film. Consisting of three short stories, each lasting about 20 minutes, the film features most of Grahame's beloved anthropomorphic animal characters, specifically Toad, Rat, Badger, and Mole. The animation was accomplished with a stop-motion process, reminiscent of George Pal's Puppetoons. The Wind in the Willows was directed by Mark Hall, of Count Duckula and Danger Mouse fame. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Wind in the Willows was originally released as the second half of the 1949 Disney animated feature Ichabod and Mr. Toad. While the first portion of the film was devoted to a sprightly adaptation of Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", the second portion was a cartoonization of one of Kenneth Grahame's whimsical "Toad of Toad Hall" tales. Eric Blore sublimely provides the voice of the aristocratic Mr. Toad, an amiable, childlike sort with a passion for automobiles. Framed on a car-theft charge by a gang of weasels, Toad is shuttled off to prison. He is rescued from durance vile by his faithful chums Mole, Rat and Badger. One of the most popular and enduring of Disney's late-1940s efforts, Wind in the Willows was in constant reissue as a entity separate from Ichabod and Mr. Toad, and was also a frequent visitor to the various Disney TV anthologies of the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Ichabod and Mr. Toad is a two-part Walt Disney cartoon feature based on a pair of well known stories. The first half of the film is an adaptation of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, all about gawky 17th century schoolteacher Ichabod Crane and his love for the beautiful Katrina. The girl's vengeful ex-beau Brom Bones decides to scare Ichabod out of Sleepy Hollow by filling the impressionable teacher's brain with stories about the ghostly Headless Horseman--who of course makes an appearance that very night! The second half of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is based on the "Toad of Toad Hall" stories from Kenneth Grahame's The Wind and the Willows. The aristocratic but childish Mr. Toad loves motorcars, but his affection leads him to a jail term when he is accused of stealing an automobile. It's up to Toad's faithful friends to break Toad out of jail and expose the real crooks. One of Disney's better "omnibus" cartoon features, Ichabod and Mr. Toad is enhanced by the narrative skills of Bing Crosby in the Ichabod segment and Basil Rathbone in the Mr. Toad sequence. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The very first Disney feature to include live-action footage, this behind-the-scenes documentary about the studio's animation process includes the cartoon short of the title, which in later years was often exhibited separately from this film. Robert Benchley stars as himself, a visitor to the Disney lot, where he intends to pitch an animated version of the children's fairy tale The Reluctant Dragon by Kenneth Grahame to Walt Disney himself. Benchley wanders away from his studio-appointed guide and tours the facilities himself, where he sees various new cartoons in the process of being storyboarded, including a Baby Weems short. Benchley also meets Clarence Nash, the voice of Donald Duck, and a young animator (played by Alan Ladd) before being corralled to Disney's screening room, where he is shown the company's new short, none other than The Reluctant Dragon. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

The sequel to the made-for-TV animated special Adventures of Mole, Adventures of Toad is one of several British-produced cartoons based on Kenneth Grahame's whimsical The Wind in the Willows. The lord of Toad Hall, capricious Mr. Toad is a source of great concern for his close friends Mole, Badger and Rat; it seems that whenever Toad is enthusiastic about something, trouble quickly follows. Right now, Toad is obsessed with his flashy new motorcar--and sure enough, he is ultimately arrested for driving too fast. Upon being sprung from jail, Toad finds out that his stately manor has been taken over by the rowdy Weasel gang, prompting his friends to formulate a scheme to help Toad regain what is rightfully his. In America, Adventures of Toad premiered over cable's Disney Channel. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
