The inner-workings of a corrupt Las Vegas casino are exposed in Martin Scorsese's story of crime and punishment. The film chronicles the lives and times of three characters: "Ace" Rothstein (Robert De Niro), a bookmaking wizard; Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci), a Mafia underboss and longtime best friend to Ace; and Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone, in a role she was born to play), a leggy ex-prostitute with a fondness for jewelry and a penchant for playing the field. Ace plays by the rules (albeit Vegas rules, which, as he reminds the audience in voiceover, would make him a criminal in any other state), while Nicky and Ginger lie, cheat, and steal their respective ways to the top. The film's first hour and a half details their rise to power, while the second half follows their downfall as the FBI, corrupt government officials, and angry mob bosses pick apart their Camelot piece by piece. ~ Jeremy Beday, All Movie Guide

Where else but on network television would you be able to see a movie starring Bob Newhart, Linda Gray, and Michael Jackson's pet chimpanzee "Bubbles"? The Entertainers was advertised as "the touching story of a chimp, a chump and the woman they love." Newhart is cast as Todd Wilson, a second-echelon nightclub comic who has a chance to make it big in Las Vegas. The hitch: Wilson won't get hired unless he reteams with his old partner Bubbles. It really is better than it sounds, thanks to supporting appearances by several veteran cabaret entertainers, short on name value but big on talent. In this sequel to the 1985 TV movie Stark, Nicholas Surovy once again assumes the role of no-nonsense Wichita cop Evan Stark. When his former partner Steve Graves (Ben Murphy) is murdered, Stark exceeds his authority by tracking the killer to Las Vegas. In addition to Surovy, Dennis Hopper, Pat Corley, and Barry Gordon repeat their Stark roles, respectively cast as Las Vegas Police Lieutenant Ron Bliss, Wichita Police Chief Waldron, and Lee Fogel. Also in the cast are two future stars: Kirstie Alley as sultry lounge singer Maggie Carter (performing "I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good" and "Taking a Chance on Love") and Gina Gershon as Allison Cromwell. Like its predecessor, Stark: Mirror Image, which debuted May 14, 1986, on CBS, was intended as the pilot for a weekly series. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
