Carlos Mencia Movies
When comic-cum-actor
Carlos Mencia arrived on the scene in the late '90s, initially as the host of the series
Funny Is Funny!, he instantly (and justly) attained a reputation as one of the most brutally, unabashedly honest, and scathing contemporary comics -- one unafraid to injure, insult or offend, and one for whom no topic was taboo. An entertainer of Mexican-Honduran heritage, raised in the barrios of East Los Angeles with 17 brothers and sisters,
Mencia projected a lightning-fast wit and a heightened social consciousness that he consistently interpolated into his material, rendering it intelligent and thoughtful. Early projects consisted predominantly of filmed standup material, as when
Mencia (alongside fellow Latino comics
Freddy Soto and
Pablo Francisco) headlined the standup concert film
The Three Amigos Uncensored! (2001), or when
Mencia landed his own cable comedy special, the aptly titled
Carlos Mencia: Not for the Easily Offended! (2005).
In 2005, the Comedy Central network offered the rising Latino star his own series,
Mind of Mencia -- a combination sketch comedy/standup review essentially run by the comedian, with such special guest stars as the late
Peter Boyle and the rapper
Method Man. It premiered to sensational ratings. In 2007,
Mencia tackled roles in both
Bob Saget's
March of the Penguins parody, the direct-to-video
Farce of the Penguins, and in the Farrelly Brothers remake
The Heartbreak Kid, starring
Ben Stiller. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

When 40-year-old San Francisco bachelor Eddie Cantrow (Ben Stiller) attends the wedding of his ex-fiancée -- and is seated at a "singles table" full of children -- he realizes maybe he's been too picky in his love life, and it's time to settle down. Fortunately, he doesn't have to compromise his standards when he meets Lila (Malin Akerman), a funny, attractive blond who does environmental research for a living. Lila's company wants to relocate her to Europe, but only because she's single -- they don't force married couples to uproot themselves. So Eddie hastily proposes to her, even though they've only been dating for six weeks. But the moment they exchange vows, Eddie starts to notice Lila's rough edges and annoying habits, which had remained hidden underneath her perfect exterior. Their Cabo San Lucas honeymoon gets off to a rough start full of tuneless pop singalongs and surprising revelations about Lila's job and her past. Things only get worse for a confused Eddie when he meets Miranda (Michelle Monaghan), a Midwesterner in Cabo for a family reunion -- and starts to wish he'd held out just a little bit longer. The Heartbreak Kid is Peter and Bobby Farrelly's remake of the 1972 Elaine May comedy of the same name, starring Charles Grodin. ~ Derek Armstrong, Rovi

Animal Planet aesthetics get infused with blush-inducing blue-humor sensibilities as director Bob Saget teams with an all-star cast of comics including Lewis Black, Tracy Morgan, Jason Alexander, Dane Cook, and Whoopi Goldberg to prove that sometimes penguins aren't as sweet as they appear to be on the silver screen. Film star Samuel L. Jackson narrates as actual footage of penguins going about their business in nature is backed by the kind of twisted voice-over work that could only come from the biggest names in comedy. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Season One of confrontiational comedian Carlos Mencia's weekly Comedy Central rantfest The Mind of Mencia begins as guest star Peter Boyle helps Mencia read his voluminous hate mail, generated by the star's willingness to attack everyone and anyone whom he regards as a racist hypocrite; Carlos also takes time out to skewer the racism inherent in ordinary road signs. Next up, the host literally smashes obsolete technology (corded phones, audio cassettes) with the help of the hammer-wielding "Mini- Gallagher". Then, "Judge Carlos" hands down harsh sentences to stupid people and conducts a search for the last white family in the barrio. West Hollywood's gay community is in for a thrashing the following week; and then, "Carlos the Dinosaur" educates his kiddie fans about the real world and goes around harrassing people who aren't working. And Rapper Method Man joins Carlos the following week for an in-depth discourse on the "N" word. Also: Holidays are "redefined" in racial terms in an episode with Gene Simmons, in which Mencia also waxes Freudian about What Women Want. Next up, the first "Dee Dee Dee Awards" and a session with the studio audiences saying whatever they &@#*ing well please. This is followed by a segment of "Why The **** is this News?" (Shark attacks in the ocean? Where ELSE?) and a tutorial on tattoos. The following week focuses on a deadly competition between the Wetbacks and the Crackers in the Biker Build-Off. Hurricane Katrina is grist for Mencia's mill in the next episode along with an "Ask Whitey" segment. Then's its off to visit Carlo's brother Joseph and revel in his "loco" DVD selections. The season ends with some "Best Of" moments and the living ghosts of Episodes Past--not to mention guest star Ryan Seacrest, who apparently never says "no"to anyone. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
