Fifteen years after Clear Lake, WI was evacuated and quarantined by the government, four young adults return to the small town in search of clues about their mysterious past. Back in 1994, a mysterious virus appeared in Clear Lake. As panic spread, a local priest (Michael Madsen) convinced a small group of high school students that the locals were being punished by God, and that the day of retribution had finally arrived. It was their job, claimed the priest, to apprehend the worst sinners, and ensure that they suffered for their transgressions. When government health officials arrived to investigate, they were shocked to discover that 13 of the locals had vanished without a trace, and the majority of the townspeople had abandoned their homes for fear of getting infected. For the following 15 years, the town sat eerily still and completely unoccupied. Now, a group of documentary filmmakers have convinced the kids who previously took part in the kidnappings to return to Clear Lake, and shed some light on the unsolved mystery. But the deeper the filmmakers and their subjects dig for answers about Clear Lake's mysterious past, the more they risk being buried alive in the process. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

On March 21, 2003, United States military forces launched an all-out offensive against Saddam Hussein's forces in Iraq, signaling the beginning of the second War in the Gulf, with an attack strategy known as "Shock and Awe." Rather than bombing the entire city, this technique was based around a large number of "surgical strikes" which pinpointed specific crucial targets with sharp focus and deep force, in the hope that the precision assault would intimidate the enemy into surrender without the need to level all of Baghdad. National Geographic: Inside Shock and Awe is a documentary which examines the military strategy behind the launch of the war in Iraq, how the Shock and Awe technique had been used in the past, and the high-tech weapons that allowed American forces to destroy important buildings and military facilities while leaving civilian areas untouched. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Add Taboo: Season 01 to Queue Add Taboo: Season 01 to top of Queue
Season one of the National Geographic Channel documentary series Taboo is filled to the brim with eye-popping glimpses of "forbidden" and often illegal traditions, practices, rites, and rituals, filmed all over the world. This season's locales include Ethiopia, Borneo, Japan, Sarawak, Mexico, Bolivia, The Philippines, Zimbabwe, Greece, Vanuatu, and even Arizona. Though some of the images are frightening and even revolting, they are undeniably fascinating. Of the 13 episodes, three are narrated by actor David McCallum: "Bloodsports," "Evil Spirits" and "Tattoo." Novella Nelson handles the narration on the remaining episodes, which include "Drugs," "Healers," "Food," "Bloodsports," "Voodoo," "Marriage," "Witchcraft," "Sexuality," "Death," "Rites of Passage," and "Tests of Faith." ~ Rovi

National Geographic Video: Afghanistan Revealed traverses onto Afghan terrain and into a nation of people plagued by war from the late '70s. Sebastian Junger, writer of The Perfect Storm, and Reza, renowned photographer, seek out the famous resistance leader Ahmed Shah Massoud (aka "The Lion of Panjshir") through the tumultuous, seething country, which soon after became inaccessible to journalists. Previously unseen footage of the resistance in Afghanistan accompanies interviews with refugees, Taliban soldiers being held captive by the Northern Alliance, and Massoud himself -- who was assassinated two days before the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001. ~ Sarah Sloboda, Rovi
