Produced for Canadian television in 2000, Touched by a Killer is based on The Rage of the Blue Moon, a play by Richard Vetere. Isabella Hoffman stars as successful but emotionally needy investigative reporter Nikki Barrington, who has come to believe that death row inmate Tyler Nash (James Wilder) has been wrongly accused of murdering a young woman at a bar. Falling in love with the charming Nash, Nikki does everything in her power to free him from prison before it is too late. She manages to succeed in this pursuit, whereupon the grateful Nash pledges eternal devotion. Before long, however, the ex-prisoner's behavior takes an ominous turn for the worse; and by film's end, a terrified Nikki must disprove what she spent the first part of the film "proving." Despite Ray's best efforts, killer Charles Carver (Colm Feore) is paroled for good behavior. Although the authorities believe that the soft-spoken, intellectual Carver has mended his ways, Ray (David Marciano) is convinced that the parolee intends to knock off everyone responsible for his arrest--and Carver confirms this by tauntingly leaving clues for Ray to uncover. As if this wasn't bad enough, Carver manages to persuade the public that he was wrongly imprisoned in the first place--and that Ray had framed him on a phony charge. Somehow this is tied in with the mysterious appearances of several Capone-era artifacts all over Chicago, and the disappearance of a young schoolgirl named Celine (Heather McComb). Along the way, Ray (David Marciano) is reunited with his junior-high sweetheart (Michele Scarabelli)--now a nun--and Celine's shy roommate Melissa (Marisol Nichols) comes out of her shell. In what is arguably the most shocking third-season episode of Law & Order, NYPD detective Phil Cerreta (Paul Sorvino) goes undercover, posing as an illegal weapons buyer to nab an elusive Colombian hitman (Carlos Sanz). Things go horribly awry, and Cerreta is shot -- twice. This episode introduces Marla Heasley in the role of Tawnia Baker, an intrepid reporter who becomes an unofficial member of the A-Team (it is explained that Tawnia's predecessor Amy Allen is "on assignment" overseas). Working undercover to expose a crooked security firm, Marla is kidnapped when she tumbles onto the firm's scheme to assassinate foreign dignitary Shiek Fatasi (Edward Ansara). Figuring they owe Marla a favor after she helped them escape the clutches of Col. Dexter (Lance LeGault), the A-Team races to her rescue. Randy Stern (Mary-Margaret Humes) hires the A-Team to help her uncle Mickey (Norman Alden), the owner of a small construction firm. A group of mobsters is determined to sabotage Mickey to prevent his excavation of some rather incriminating evidence--namely, the murdered body of his former partner. Inasmuch as this episode begins at the Universal studios where A-Team leader Hannibal is doing stunt work for a horror picture (dressed as the Creature from the Black Lagoon), expect a number of cute movie in-jokes, ranging from the name of the head villain (Carl Denham!) to a chance meeting between series regular Dirk Benedict and one of his former "co-stars" from Battlestar Gallactica. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
