As young children, Ivan, Julia, and Kike were inseparable. Later, after being separated by circumstance for many years, this former "tripleja" is reunited and compelled to reconcile their lives despite the differences that now divide them. There was a time when Ivan, Julia, and Kike lived on the Puerto Rican island of Culebra, and spent most of their time frolicking among the lush vegetation. Ivan and Kike had become blood brothers after Kike saved Ivan from drowning, but that didn't them from competing for the affections of the lovely Julia. Eventually, Ivan is drafted and sent to Vietnam, bringing Julia and Kike to grow closer than ever before. Yet despite an intimate encounter between the pair, Julia pines for Ivan and is heartbroken to receive news that he is missing in action. Much to Julia's surprise, Ivan eventually returns and the couple is quickly married. While Ivan and Julia attempt to start a new life in New York City, the war has taken its toll on Ivan and the recurring nightmares drive the haunted veteran to first hit the bottle, and then his wife. Eventually making the decision to mend his ways for the sake of Julia and his small children, Ivan is diagnosed with terminal cancer and makes the decision to return to Culebra so that he may die in peace. Upon arriving in their old hometown, however, Ivan and Julia discover that Kike has become an embittered alcoholic, and that his daughter Aidita is a hardcore drug addict. Despite the fact that Ivan can only think about dying, he soon takes a job helping addicts that finds him frequently venturing out to local islands by boat. One island in particular, a small mass of land known to the locals as Cayo, seems to have a mysterious and profound affect on Ivan's health. Now, as Kike reveals a longstanding secret about Julia's oldest son and federal authorities attempt to block Ivan from returning to Cayo, these three former friends will find out that it's never too late to set the record straight. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

In this comedy, Nydia (Thalia) was born in New York City to a family of Puerto Rican immigrants who run a restaurant. Nydia is on summer vacation after her freshman year at Boston University, and comes home to discover things are not well with the family business; customers have not been coming around, and unless they start coming back, the family will be in serious trouble. Word in the neighborhood has it that Fat Tony (Robert Costanzo), a local Mob boss, is on the outs with his superiors and is expected to be the victim of a Mob hit. Nydia's brother Ricky (Rick Gonzalez) gets an idea -- if Fat Tony gets whacked in their restaurant, the publicity would be invaluable, so he invites Fat Tony to dine there every day on the house. Fat Tony takes Ricky up on the offer, and sure enough, Fat Tony becomes the victim of a Mob hit, with curious crime devotees packing the restaurant from then on. However, since Fat Tony had been hanging out at the restaurant, some of his former associates get the idea that Ricky had a hand in the double dealings that helped get Fat Tony killed, and soon Ricky gets a visit from some very ill-tempered gangsters. Meanwhile, Nydia has convinced her college boyfriend Chris (Richard Hillman), who studies at Harvard, that she's actually the daughter of a wealthy family from Argentina -- which leaves her with a lot of explaining to do when Chris shows up. Mambo Café also stars Paul Rodriguez, Danny Aiello, and Rosana De Soto. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

One of the most highly touted projects of the 1997-1998 TV season, Four Corners was introduced by CBS as a four-part miniseries, debuting February 24, 1998. Ann-Margret heads the cast as Amanda "Maggie" Wyatt, the headstrong widowed matriarch of a once-powerful California rancing family. Despite the encroachment of housing developments and ski resorts, Maggie is determined to keep Four Corners up and running. Unfortunately for her, Maggie's son Alex (Doug Wert) has evinced sympathy for the land developers; also, her best friend Carlota Alvarez (Sonia Braga) has cast her lot with a group of local migrant workers. In other intrigues, Maggie's amorous daughter Kate (Megan Ward) still hopes to get her lunchhooks into Carlotta's son Tomas (Kamar De Los Reyes), and never mind that he has become a priest; and Maggie's foreman Sam (Raymond J. Barry must deal with the return of his jailbird son Caleb (Justin Chambers). The plan was to follow the pattern set by the classic prime time soap opera Dallas by introducing Four Corners as a limited series, then go to a full weekly program once it had won the viewers' hearts. But those hearts turned cold in a hurry--and as a result only three of the four completed episodes had been telecast when CBS abruptly axed the project on March 3, 1998. Since that time, Four Corners has been rebroadcast as a two-part TV movie by the Lifetime cable network, under the title Homestead. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
