The title character of this half hour animated series was a gigantic reconditioned robot. Young coach potato Coop had rescued the robot from a junkyard where it had been rusting away for 60 years, then retooled the pile of metal to create the world's largest plaything. At this point, young Kiva, a visitor from the future, appeared before Coop and demanded that he surrender Megas XLFR to her. According to Kiva, the robot was essential in saving the "present" universe from the villains of the future, headed by evil alien Glorft. Trouble was, Coop had so extensively modified Megas that he was the only person able to control the robot. Thus it was that Coop found himself in the unenviable position of potential savior of the universe, a burden he tried to share with both Kiva and his best pal Jamie. Created by George Krstic and Jody Schaeffer, Megas XLR had originally been titled LowBrow, but was rechristened on the eve of its Cartoon Network debut on May 1, 2004. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Created by Keiko Nobumoto (Cowboy Bebop), the half-hour Wolf's Rain was, like many another Japanese anime series, set in a post-apocalyptic future. This time around, the human characters lived in domed cities, surrounded by a devastated world. Meanwhile, the Earth's surviving wolves, presumed extinct for two centuries, had managed to disguise themselves as humans to survive. The plotline focused on four young humanized wolves, each named for a part of the wolf "makeup": Kiba (Fang), Tsume (Claw), Hige (Whisker) and Toboe (Howl). Inspired by the vision of Flower Maiden Cheza and spurred on by the scent of the Lunar Flowers, the quartet set out to find the legendary "wolf paradise" of Rakunan. There was only one hitch -- if and when the wolves finally located Rakunan, the world would come to an end! First telecast in Japan on January 6, 2003, Wolf's Rain consisted of 26 episodes, plus four OAV episodes -- produced exclusively for home video -- which wrapped up the story. The entire series made its American debut courtesy of Cartoon Network on April 24, 2004. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Created for Japanese television by Masashi Kishimoto, the half-hour anime series Naruto was set in the "ninja village" of Konoha. Protagonist Naruto Uzumaki was a misfit ninja-in-training who resorted to mischief so that people would notice him. Although circumstances had led the villagers to assume that Naruto was a demon, he was actually destined to become the "Hokage," or leader, of Konoha, but he was in desperate need of the input and support of his friends and fellow ninjas in order to accomplish this goal. Iruka and Kakashi were Naruto's main instructors at the Ninja Academy; his rival was Sasuke, heir to the fabled Uchicha ninja family, whose mission in life was to avenge the deaths of his loved ones; and Sakura was a gorgeous female ninja trainee, who was in love with the tactiturn Sasuke -- and who in turn was loved by the moonstruck Naruto. First telecast in Japan on October 3, 2002, Naruto was seen in the U.S. courtesy of Cartoon Network beginning September 10, 2005. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
