Now that a live transmission system has been set up between Voyager and Earth, the crew receives its first Starfleet order in years. Their mission: To search for Friendship One, an Earth probe that has been missing since the year 2067 A.D. Tracing the probe to a planet held in the grip of nuclear-winter radiation, the Away Team is captured by a band of hostile aliens, who hold all humans responsible for their dismal existence. Janeway's (Kate Mulgrew) only hope to rescue her colleagues is to find a new home planet for the aliens -- but this may not be possible for several years to come. As originally conceived, this episode was to have featured James Cromwell in his Star Trek: First Contact role of Zephram Cochran, but Cromwell was unavailable. When Kate (Christa Miller) complains that Drew (Drew Carey) is spoiling his dog Speedy, the mutt responds by turning hostile towards Kate--and by biting Oswald's supervisor on the eve of a job evaluation. Dr. Kelly (Bari Hochwald), DrugCo's resident animal psychologist, declares that Drew has triggered an emotional tug of war between Speedy and Kate. It soon develops that only way Drew can keep both his dog and his girlfriend under control is by arming himself with a squirt gun! Meanwhile, Mimi (Kathy Kinney) and Steve (John Carroll Lynch) go to great and ridiculous lengths to have a baby. Sam Donovan (William H. Macy) -- the ratings consultant Isaac (Robert Guillaume) hired to help the show -- has everyone feeling on edge. After Dana (Felicity Huffman) and Sam both agree that the last couple of shows have been stilted, Sam suggests Dana do something provocative such as sexily whispering cues into Dan (Josh Charles) and Casey's (Peter Krause) earpieces. Insulted, Dana instead takes out her anger on Dan and Casey during the next commercial break. Sam decides that his presence is throwing everyone off and decides to leave the set -- but not before taking the script and turning off the teleprompter, forcing Dana to cue Dan and Casey via their earpieces. Also concerned about the show -- but not necessarily for the people who work on it -- is CSC network bigwig J.J. (Robert Mailhouse), who descends upon the studio with his own ideas for boosting the ratings. Insisting on meeting with the senior staff to go through his notes point by point, he proceeds to totally alienate everyone and quite nearly fires Dana -- who has been contemplating other job offers since Sam's arrival. Sam confronts J.J. during a break in the meeting and demands that the network let him do his job as he kicks J.J. and his lackeys out of the studio. ~ Ryan Shriver, All Movie Guide
