Clayne Crawford Movies

With a prematurely grizzled image enhanced by a dash of post-grunge earthiness, rugged young athlete-turned-actor Clayne Crawford maintains a staunchly anti-Hollywood glitz outlook, having made his film debut in a pair of quirky independent features before moving on to such teen films as A Walk to Remember and Swimfan (both 2002). An Alabama native who initially moved to Los Angeles in hopes of playing baseball at U.C.L.A., Crawford found himself questioning the reality of his dream when he was sidelined by an injury that ended his career on the diamond and found him seeking work in construction. After witnessing the ease with which his friends found commercial work, the onetime baseball hopeful opted to eschew concrete pouring in favor of being in front of the cameras. Though success was by no means immediate, it wasn't long before Crawford met actress Sunny Mabrey while working in a local theater. After finding out the two grew up a mere 20 minutes from one another, the aspiring actors became inseparable and eventually engaged. By Crawford's account, it was the exact day that he decided to let rejection roll down his back that he was offered a substantial role in the independent drama Gas Station Jesus (2001). After appearing in the I Am Legend-inspired horror-thriller One Blood Planet that same year, Crawford's newfound success found him landing roles in A Walk to Remember and Swimfan before turning up alongside Al Pacino in 2003's The Recruit. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A wanted criminal finds he's the one in danger when he hides out in the house of a seemingly ordinary man in this thriller from Australian director Nick Tomnay. John Taylor (Clayne Crawford) is a thief who is having an especially bad day; he was part of a bank robbery that went spectacularly wrong, leaving him with a seriously injured foot and his description being broadcast by every news outlet in the city. John needs to get off the streets fast, so he stops at a nearby home and bluffs his way inside, telling the man of the house, Warwick Wilson (David Hyde Pierce), that he's a friend of a friend and was told to drop by sometime. Warwick buys John's story, and even invites him to stay for dinner, but before long John realizes he picked the wrong house to pull this scam. Warwick is a perfect gentleman on the outside, but inside he's an angry and unstable person, and when he finds out that John isn't an ordinary visitor, he's in for a fight for his life. The Perfect Host was an official selection at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Five men desperately try to recover their memories and piece together the traumatic events of the past several days in this independent thriller. In an abandoned warehouse, a handful of men slowly regain consciousness, but they've been stricken with amnesia and have no idea who they are, where they are, or what has happened to them. As the men compare the tiny shards of memory they can pull from their minds, one finds a newspaper from two days before, which features a front-page story about the kidnapping of a wealthy and well-known businessman. The men begin to suspect that they were involved with the kidnapping, but no one is sure if they're on the right or wrong side of the law -- or if one of them might happen to be the victim. Filmed independently under the title Gas Station Jesus, this contemporary parable stars Lori Heuring as Maggie Tate, who finds herself pregnant by "miraculous conception." Miraculous or no, Maggie doesn't want to have the baby, but is pressured to do so by a group of threatening-looking Christian fundamentalists. She ends up stranded at a remote gas station with an enigmatic old preacher named Isaiah (Tucker Smallwood) and his equally strange son, who repeat the mantra that Maggie has absolutely no control over her future nor the future of her baby. A climactic chase and a second miracle provide any number of surprises for both our heroine and her pursuers. After a limited round of film-festival showings, Gas Station Jesus was brought to American cable television through the auspices of the Lifetime channel under the less provocative title Miracle Baby. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The disappearance of a military leader and the death of four of his men leads two investigators to wade through a morass of deceptions and half-truths in search of the facts in this thriller. Sgt. Nathan West (Samuel L. Jackson) is the leader of an elite team of U.S. Army Special Forces operatives known as the Army Rangers; West is known as a highly effective officer, but one with a short temper and aggressive attitude who is not well liked by his soldiers. During a seemingly routine training exercise in Panama, a hurricane sweeps in, and four of West's six men are dead, while West himself seems to have vanished. Eager to get the facts behind what happened, Col. Bill Styles (Tim Daly) assigns Capt. Julia Osborne (Connie Nielsen) to investigate. However, Osborne is having a hard time getting the two survivors to talk, so Styles brings in Tom Hardy (John Travolta), a former Army Ranger who served under West and became a first-class interrogator; Hardy later became a DEA agent, but left law enforcement after allegations of corruption. Hardy interviews Dunbar (Brian Van Holt), who claims that the four soldiers had been murdered, and West was killed in retaliation. Kendall (Giovanni Ribisi), the other survivor (whose father is a powerful officer) has a very different story of how the five men turned up dead, and it's up to Hardy and Osborne to determine who is telling the truth -- or if anyone is saying exactly what happened. Basic marked the first time John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson appeared in the same film together since their breakthrough roles in Pulp Fiction. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A moment of temptation leads to a high body count and untold regrets for a high-school swimming star in this thriller starring Bring It On's Jesse Bradford and Traffic's Erika Christensen. Despite a shady past involving drugs and the juvenile justice system, Ben Cronin (Bradford) seems to have it all: a loving mother, a devoted girlfriend (Shiri Appleby), and a shot at a college scholarship in California. But the same week that athletic scouts will be deciding his future, Ben finds himself embroiled in a flirtation with Madison Bell (Christensen), a bewitching transfer student who seduces him into supposedly strings-free sex during an impromptu swim lesson after hours in the school pool. When Ben takes Madison at her word and goes about his business as if nothing had happened, she insinuates herself into his life with sinister glee. Showing up at Ben's house, befriending his girlfriend, and sending him naked pictures -- none of her strategies wins his heart. So Madison turns to other, more devious forms of courtship. Soon, Ben finds himself kicked off the swim team for supposed steroid use, suspected of murdering a rival (Clayne Crawford), and rejected by his girlfriend for his sexual indiscretions. Eventually, though, he receives help in uncovering the genesis of Madison's uncanny fixation from an unexpected source.
