With embarrassing dialogue and a theatrical style, this feature-length comedy is based on cartoon characters and is equally two-dimensional. After some misguided attempts at mixing with the riff-raff, the young rich heiress Paulette (Jeanne Marine) decides to start giving her money away to anyone who sounds like they really need it. Considering this to be an act of insanity, her greedy and crooked estate administrator gets her institutionalized. In retaliation, Paulette escapes with a fellow inmate, and after several misadventures (some nudity here) she finds herself nearly drowned and still no closer to regaining her estate. In this thriller a beautiful girl approaches a journalist in a Parisian bar. Her clothing is in tatters and she seems dazed. She tells him that someone has drugged her and that she needs a place to rest. The gentlemanly journalist obliges and takes her home. The following day, she has fully recovered and they stroll through town. The woman believes that someone is following her, and she suddenly disappears. Later the writer reads the paper and learns that her body was found in a car wreck. He is highly skeptical and tries to find her. Sure enough, he learns that the death was a ruse staged by her stepfather who wanted to collect on her insurance policy. They care for each other but often revert to selfishness, as all social structure and morality have been shattered by the conflict. Michel Piccoli stars as an amorous dentist whose philandering seemingly knows no bounds. He is no sooner shooing such lovelies as Anna Karina and Elsa Martinelli out the back door than he is welcoming such "new blood" as Joanna Shimkus into his living room. When Shimkus demands a commitment, Piccoli runs home movies of his past girlfriends, insisting all the while that he has forgotten them and that Joanna is the only woman in his life. The very next day he's running his movies for still another woman, and the song continues. Philippe Avron plays a bumbling burglar whose crime career is a textbook case of failure. One evening, Avron comes upon an abandoned nightgown. Upon donning the garment, he feels he has been transformed into an angel. Avron then joins a strange circus, whence he hopes to dispense goodwill to the other misfits of the world. As with the other works of director Albert Lamorisse (The Red Balloon) Lamorisse, it is virtually impossible to determine where reality leaves off and fantasy takes over in Circus Angel, a fact that was instrumental in the film's winning a "Best Special Effects" award at the Cannes Film Festival. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Director René Clair pokes fun at the gentlemanly art of warfare that existed in the 18th century in this war comedy. Jean-Pierre Casell plays a soldier of fortune who tries to mediate in a conflict between two Dukes that led to battle. He mediates in the name of a fickle princess to negotiate peace among the rival factions.
