An amalgam of Death Race 2000 and Lost with CGI effects thrown in, the quasi-fantasy action series Drive centered around a strange, exclusive, strictly secret and highly illegal cross-country race, wherein the contestants were all but shanghaied into participating for a winning purse of $32,000,000--assuming they lived that long. The first contestant was Alex (Nathan Fillion), who was desperately searching for his missing wife. A mystical race promoter named Mr. Bright (Charles Martin Smith) lured Alex to Florida by implying that he'd never see his wife again unless he agreed to become a driver. Alex was then teamed with wild blonde Kristin (Corinna Wiles), who acted as if she knew what it was all about. In truth, NO one knew what it was all about--not the woman just released from a hospital, nor the two siblings who were driving a "cursed" Cadillac, nor the paroled criminal, nor the Iraq veteran and his girlfriend, nor the scientist and his teenaged daughter. Though everyone knew that the race began in Florida, none of the racers had the slightest idea where it was headed, nor the remotest clue as to the location of the finish line. And how about the fact that none of the vehicles were actually sports cars? Only one thing was certain: Those who lost the race faced the direst of consequences. As was often the cast in enigmatic exercises of this nature, the course of the race and the backstories of the contestants were revealed bit by bit, episode by episode, on a need-to-know basis. When family issues, a falling-out with his girlfriend Christie (Swain), and a series of disheartening losses to his nemesis Jason (Brent le Macks) take the air out of Alex's launch, he sets his snowboard aside in favor of supporting his family with a job at the local garage. Now more concerned with financial stability than following his dreams, Alex seems to have lost all faith in both himself and his abilities. Why rent a dirty movie when you can make your own? That's the can-do philosophy embraced by a handful of girl-crazy teens in this comedy. Fred (Tony Denman), Deacon (Erik von Detten), and Matt (Daniel Farber) are three high school kids who, like most teenaged boys, are obsessed with sex. Deacon has a part time job at a video rental shop with a large selection of adult films, and he's been able to sneak porn titles out of the store on a regular basis, to the great enthusiasm of Matt and Fred, who not only enjoy the videos themselves but dub bootleg copies they sell to their classmates to make pocket money. However, when Deacon loses his job, the guys are left high and dry, until one of them gets an idea -- they've seen enough porn movies to know what the average viewer expects from one, so why don't they make one themselves? However, recruiting the performers necessary for such a project turns out to be harder than they expected, with exotic dancer Ashley (Sarah Jane Potts) and neighborhood bully Jake (Riley Smith) rising to the top of a very shallow talent pool. The first production from the guys is an unexpected success, but they soon discover that not everyone is happy with their good fortune, especially sleazy porn kingpin Vic Ramalot (Horatio Sanz), who isn't interested in having more competition. A troubled teen finds his way back on track by following the gridiron in this romantic sports comedy starring Riley Smith and Meredith Monroe. Matt Sabo (Smith) just can't seem to find his path in life, but when a run-in with the law leaves him with the choice of stewing behind bars or attending an all-star football camp, the pigskin begins to take priority. If Sabo can change his attitude and make good on the gridiron, it could mean a full-ride scholarship at the college of his choice, and when a beautiful young woman named Amy (Monroe) comes into his life his priorities all seem to come into focus. The most romantic place in town becomes the scene of a bloodbath in this grisly horror story. Mandy Anderson (Erin J. Dean) is a pretty teenager who has more than her share of emotional baggage to deal with. When she was five years old, Mandy's mother was killed by a psychotic who tore her apart with a metal hook. Adding shame to Mandy's shock, her mother was murdered at a notorious local make-out spot with her lover, while her husband, Tom (Matt Riedy), was the police officer sent to investigate the murder -- and young Mandy was with him while he was on patrol. Thirteen years have passed, and Mandy is attending high school along with Michael Lamson (Riley Smith) and Chloe (Sarah Lancaster). Mandy isn't especially close to either Michael or Chloe, as she's still trying to keep an emotional distance from the trauma of her past, but they're forced to come together when Mandy learns the man who killed her mother has escaped from a mental hospital and is on the loose. Incidentally, if you think the actress who plays Mandy's mother bears a striking resemblance to Erin J. Dean, there's a good reason -- she played both roles, crediting herself as Ann Jeider for the flashback at the beginning of the film. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
