En route to her home town of Amphipolis in the company of her daughter, Eve (Adrienne Wilkinson), and her friend Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor), Xena finds that it has become literally a ghost town, populated by corpses, wraiths, and ghouls. In trying to find out what had happened, Xena and her friends are besieged by all manner of horrors, not the least of which is a swarm of flesh-eating maggots. Meanwhile, watching from their heavenly perch, two archangels observe Xena dispassionately and discuss what may become her ultimate destiny -- ascending to the hellish throne of Mephistopheles. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Family differences and personal grudges add drama to an already tense situation as the lives of a team of mountain climbers hang in the balance in this action drama. Peter Garrett (Chris O'Donnell) and his sister Annie (Robin Tunney) are the children of Royce Garrett (Stuart Wilson), an avid outdoorsman and climbing enthusiast who died when an accident left all three hanging from a single rope; Royce ordered Peter to cut him loose to save the lives of his kids, even though he knew it would mean his death. Years later, Peter has given up climbing and become a respected nature photographer, while Annie, who holds Peter responsible for her father's death, is a famous world-class mountain climber who is hired by Elliot Vaughn (Bill Paxton), a self-made billionaire, to help him scale K2, a mountain in the Himalayas that's the second-highest peak in the world. In the midst of the climb, dangerous weather strikes, and Elliot, Annie, and their crew find themselves trapped in a cavern that's been sealed tight by an avalanche. Peter, who is near K2 working on an assignment, quickly organizes a crew of expert climbers to save Annie and the other mountaineers, who must work under a tight deadline before the trapped climbers run out of air. Peter's partners in the rescue include beautiful medic Monique (Izabella Scorupco), radical climbers Cyril (Steve Le Marquand) and Malcolm (Ben Mendelsohn), disciplined Pakistani crewman Kareem (Alexander Siddig), and Montgomery (Scott Glenn), an eccentric outdoorsman who has a score to settle with Elliot. While backgrounds were shot on location in Pakistan, most of the climbing sequences in Vertical Limit were actually filmed on mountain ranges in New Zealand. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Season five of Xena: Warrior Princess begins on a bleak note, inasmuch as both the titular Xena (Lucy Lawless) and her traveling companion, Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor), had been crucified by the Romans at the end of season four -- thereby fulfilling the prophecy of the evil shamaness Alti. As Xena and Gabrielle's friends Joxer (Ted Raimi), Amarice (Jennifer Sky), and Eli (Timothy Omundson) mournfully set about the task of recovering their bodies, a full-scale war rages between Heaven and Hell to claim the ladies' souls. And thanks to the perfidy of Xena's old enemy Callisto (Hudson Leick), the spirit of Gabrielle is veering dangerously toward the Demonic. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

When her comrade in arms Vercinix (Tamati Rice), leader of the Gauls, is captured by Julius Caesar (Karl Urban), Xena (Lucy Lawless) tries to negotiate a trade. If Vercinix is set free, she will release her own captive, Roman aristocrat Crassus (Matthew Chamberlain). As to the question of whether or not Caesar will uphold his end of the bargain, suffice to say that Xena ends up outnumbered in the gladiatorial arena. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

While fishing with Xena (Lucy Lawless), Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor) reels in a wounded Athenian soldier -- and in an instant, both of our heroines are surrounded by the Horde, a primitive tribe of warriors with whom Xena has had a traumatic previous encounter. Escaping, Xena and Gabrielle come across other Athenian victims of the Horde's brutality, and before long Xena is forced to lead the surviving Athenians against their enemy. In the thick of battle, Xena's "dark side" re-emerges, and soon she has become as vicious and ruthless as the Horde -- thereby galvanizing the more compassionate Gabrielle into desperate action. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
