A detective investigating the kidnapping of a Chilean chemist sought as a witness by international authorities must dig deep into her past to solve the perplexing case in director Esteban Schroeder's tense drama. Julia Gudari is beginning to suspect that the Ugandan army is protecting the subject of her investigation. Though she suspects that her father, a general in the Ugandan army, may have played a part in the kidnapping, a substantial lack of evidence prevents her from pursuing this hunch. Now, as the pressure begins to build on all sides, Julia must face her greatest fears and dig deep into her past if she holds out any hope of discovering what really happened to the missing chemist. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Director Marcelo Bertalmío offers an endearing look at a decidedly bleak topic with this tale of a kind-hearted but put-upon soul who finally decides to end it all. Basilio has a gentle soul a huge heart; the only problem is that no one really seems to notice just how wonderful a person he truly is. His wife puts him down every chance she gets, his colleagues make him the butt of their every joke, and even the man who walks his dog despises him. When the weight of the world simply becomes too much to bear, Basilio finally determines to end it all. But when his suicide attempt is interrupted by a twelve-year-old girl, a noise-pollution officer, and an endearingly absent-minded woman who just can't seem to keep track of her mobile phone, Basilio soon begins to view the oppressive city in an entirely new, refreshingly optimistic light. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A documentary about Marita Lorenz, possibly one of the most fascinating and controversial people of the 20th century, particularly in the realm of U.S.-Cuba relations. According to Lorenz herself, her life was one of almost unparalleled tragedy and intrigue. Raped by an American soldier at the age of seven, she also survived Bergen-Belsen and went on to become the lover of both Fidel Castro and a former Venezuelan dictator. If that wasn't enough, Lorenz also claimed to be an operative of both the FBI and CIA, and maintained that the latter sent her to Cuba to poison Castro. And, on top of everything else, questions still abound about Lorenz's possible connection to the Kennedy assassination: not only did she apparently visit Dallas with the CIA days before Kennedy was shot there, but she also was linked to Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby. Many critics doubt Lorenz's claims, which Dear Fidel attempts to address in thorough and thought-provoking detail. Dear Fidel was screened at the 2002 Philadelphia Festival of World Cinema. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi
