Helen Wright Movies
An operatically trained singer who had appeared in Earl Carroll's revue, blue-eyed, auburn-haired Helen Wright was awarded a contract with Universal in 1930 and starred opposite Glenn Tryon in the screen version of Dames Ahoy (1930), a comedy about three sailors searching for a cheating blonde (Gertrude Astor). Although receiving good reviews, neither Tryon nor Wright enjoyed much success in talkies, the latter leaving films altogether after a low-budget Hoot Gibson oater, Spurs (1930). She should not be confused with the veteran character actress (A Doll's House, 1917) of the same name. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie GuideFilmed in the majestic high desert country near Lone Pine, California, this early sound Western starred Hoot Gibson as a rodeo cowboy hunting down the villain who killed the brother of young Buddy Hunter. Along with sidekick Pee Wee Holmes, Gibson infiltrates the notorious Pecos gang to get close to the killer, Indian Joe (Pete Morrison). As it turns out, Indian Joe is in the employ of nasty Philo McCullough, who kidnaps both Holmes and young Hunter. There's a rodeo to lighten up the dour proceedings (which Gibson of course wins) and a final ride to the rescue. According to reviewers, both leading lady Helen Wright and McCullough had a hard time emoting in front of the dreaded microphone. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide

The overall comic tone of Dames Ahoy is implicit in its title. Chubby Otis Harlan is cast as veteran seaman Bill Jones, who while drunk is tricked into marriage by a blonde gold-digger. Waking up the next morning, all Bill can remember is that his elusive bride has a strawberry-shaped birthmark on her knee. His sailor buddies Jimmy Chase (Glenn Tryon) and MacDougal (Eddie Gribbon) then set about to find the missing blonde, hoping to pay her off and get her out of Bill's hair (what there is of it). The girl turns out to be brassy Gertrude Astor, whom MacDougal claims as his own -- while Jimmy, having mistakenly fingered Mabel McGuire (Helen Wright) as the strawberry girl, falls in love with Mabel. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
