After years of upholding law and order on the cop drama Homicide: Life on the Street, Andre Braugher crossed over to the criminal side as the title character in the FX network weekly Thief. Set in post-Katrina New Orleans, the series cast Braugher as Nick Atwater, who supplemented his income as a vintage-car dealer by masterminding a team of thieves. Although Nick tried to keep his personal and professional life secret, this proved difficult when he was forced to shoulder the responsibility for his resentful and trouble-prone stepdaughter, Tammi Deveraux (Mae Whitman), after his wife, Wanda (Dina Meyer), was killed in a car accident. (In the first episode, Nick was arranging to get Tammi out of a jam with the New Orleans cops even as he and his cohorts were in the middle of pulling off a jewel heist in San Francisco!) Further complicating his life was a botched assignment in which Nick's team wound up with money stolen from a particularly vicious band of Chinese gangsters -- not to mention our "hero"'s ongoing struggle to play on both sides of the legal fence in order to keep his head above water. Also in the cast was Michael Rooker as Nick's nemesis and verbal sparring partner John Hayes, a corrupt police detective to whom extortion was second nature; Linda Hamilton as Rosalyn, Nick's fence, who like many TV-series outlaws had her own peculiar code of ethics; Clifton Collins Jr. as Nick's confederate Jack "Bump" Hill, the obligatory "crook with a conscience"; Yancey Arias as Gabriel "Gabo" Williams, the equally obligatory loose cannon of the gang, who also had a hit-and-run romance with Detective Hayes' wife; Malik Yoba as comedy-relief character Elmo "Mo" Jones, who like his boss Nick did his best to be a good family man; and Will Yun Lee as irascible Chinese hit man Vincent Chan, who was willing to let Nick live only long enough to get his mob's money back. By the time the series had concluded its initial six-week run, Nick and company were neck-deep in a scheme to steal govnerment money originally intended to pay off local authorities in the Colombian drug war. Two girls born at the same time on different sides of the world are brought together by an act of mercy in this drama. Katie (Mika Boorem) is a high-school student who has grown up in a wealthy suburb of Los Angeles. While Katie has never had to want for material things, she feels a certain dissatisfaction in her life, and between dealing with her combative parents (Beau Bridges and Linda Hamilton), her sexually aggressive boyfriend (Erik von Detten), and a mysterious boy who has caught her eye (Jonathan Trent), Katie is ready for a change in her life. One of Katie's teachers, Mr. Matthews (Sean Astin) persuades Katie to investigate Doctor's Gift, an international medical outreach program, as a rewarding volunteer opportunity that would look good on her college admission forms. Katie end up traveling to China with the Doctor's Gift team, where she discovers a world far different than the one she has known. Katie encounters Lin (Yi Ding), a girl who was born the same day she was but has led a very different life; facially disfigured, Lin was abandoned by her parents as an infant, and when she was taken in by Daniel (Luoyong Wang), it caused a rift that ended his marriage. The Doctor's Gift organization has offered to provide plastic surgery for Lin through their affiliated program Project Smile, but after previous surgery failed to correct her defects, Lin isn't so sure she wants to risk another disappointment. Nia Morgan (Lynn Whitfield) is convinced her husband is being unfaithful to her; she hires Rachel (Linda Hamilton) to lure her spouse into infidelity, but Rachel learns that Nia's husband is actually involved with Betty (Mia Farrow), an older and unglamorous waitress. And after Dr. Noonan decides she can't handle the deep neuroses of Suzanne Nabor (Camryn Manheim), Suzanne snaps and takes the doctor hostage, along with three other people. Single father Will Reed (Treat Williams) and his teenaged son Seth (Jonathan Jackson) have increasingly uncomfortable conflicts that go beyond the usual coming-of-age difficulties. Seth has grown reclusive and mysterious as his father does his best to communicate with him. Seth's binge drinking and drug use get him in trouble with his girlfriend Robin (Schuyler Fisk) and her family, and his unwelcome advances on Tina (Linda Hamilton), a co-worker of Will's who has a crush on Will, make things even more unsettling. Will is hardly prepared for what comes next: Seth begins giving his father items of clothing as gifts -- items that may be evidence of a series of murders in their small New Hampshire town. Each time Will confronts Seth with the evidence, a very calm Seth has an innocent answer. Even the police think Will is going too far. Is Seth a serial killer, or is Will losing his mind?

Yet another teenager discovers how difficult growing up can be in this comedy-drama. It's 1973, and 15-year-old Natalie (Majandra Delfino), shy and bookish, is caught in the emotional crossfire at home when her hippie-ish mom, Ruby (Linda Hamilton), discovers that dad, Hugh (Eugene Levy), a psychology professor at a local college, has been having an affair with one of his students. Natalie is having problems of her own, of the "boys don't make passes at girls who wear glasses" variety, which is not helped very much by her friend Kay (Megan Good), who is pretty enough to have already caught the attention of several good-looking boys. However, much to Natalie's surprise, one of Kay's new flames starts giving her the eye, and appears to like what he sees. The Secret Life Of Girls was the directorial debut for screenwriter Holly Goldberg Sloan, whose previous credits include the remakes of Angels In The Outfield and Mighty Joe Young. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Inspired by a true story (the events of which led to the Sipes vs. McGhee trial, in which the United States Supreme Court declared that covenants used to segregate neighborhoods were unconstitutional), The Color of Courage concerns Mac McGhee (Roger Guenveur Smith), his wife Minnie (Lynn Whitfield), and their two sons, an African-American family who move into an all-white neighborhood in the early 1940s. Hoping to avoid trouble early on, The McGhees move in at night, but the neighbors soon become aware that a black family is living nearby. Anna Sipes (Linda Hamilton), who lives next door, is a bored housewife whose husband forbids her to work outside the home; wanting to be a good neighbor, she bakes a cake as a welcoming gift for the McGhees, and Minnie accepts it graciously. Minnie and Anna get to know each other and discover that they have a good bit in common. However, as their friendship grows, animosity against the McGhees begins to build, and Anna's husband Benjamin (Bruce Greenwood) joins with members of the neighborhood association to use legal means to force the McGhee family to move elsewhere. Old Smokey develops a bad temper in this volcanic disaster spectacle. Harry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan) is a volcano expert whose interest became more than academic after he lost the woman he loved in a volcanic emergency. When he is sent to investigate unusual seismic activity in the quiet Pacific Northwest community of Dante's Peak, he discovers people boiled to death in the local hot spring and plant and animal life dying or displaying unusual illnesses near the city's supposedly dormant volcano. Harry becomes convinced that a major volcanic catastrophe is in the cards. Rachel Wando (Linda Hamilton), the town's mayor, is a single mother who also runs the local cafe, and now that Dante's Peak has been named one of the most desirable small towns in America, tourists have been flocking to the diner and other local businesses. While concerned with the safety of her community, Rachel takes a cynical view of Harry's warnings about the volcano; she has no desire to alarm either the town's residents or the wealthy visitors lining the city's pockets. Nevertheless, Harry tries to convince Rachel of the potential danger, as they begin to develop feelings for each other that are not strictly professional. This 12-minute short featuring much of the cast and crew of Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) cost $60 million to produce, making it the most expensive venture per minute in movie history. The film was the centerpiece of a multimedia attraction at the Universal Studios Florida theme park in Orlando and represented a quantum leap forward in interactive entertainment. The show begins with television monitors in the entranceway laying foundation for the story as the spectators wait in line, and the show continues inside a state-of-the-art auditorium. A spokeswoman for Cyberdyne Systems explains that the terrorist actions presented in the last feature did not stop construction of Skynet, the global satellite nuclear-defense system. Some stunt doubles for the series' stars appear onstage while the real actors appear on video, taking over the presentation and leading a motorcycle ride across the stage and seemingly into the movie screen by the Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and John Connor (Edward Furlong). This cues the start of the spectacular 3-D short, which takes place in 2029 Los Angeles. John and the Terminator battle vicious killer robots including the gigantic T-1,000,000, the most fearsome Terminator yet seen, on their way to finally destroying Skynet for good. Three different screens, astounding 3-D effects, and mechanical enhancements such as mists of water and vibrating seats put the audience directly into the multimedia experience as never before. This psychological thriller was cowritten by Steven Pressfield, who went on to become a successful novelist with The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000) and historical fiction such as Gates of Fire and Tides of War. Linda Hamilton stars as Lauren Porter, a well-regarded professor of psychology who fears that she may be suffering from multiple personality disorder. As a young girl, she received psychological scars when her mother murdered her stepfather and then committed suicide. She approaches one of her students, Tom Beckwith (James Belushi), a former cop who has quit the force in order to study psychology, and tells him of her concerns. Although he is struggling with his own relationship with his daughter, Beckwith agrees to trail Porter, and before long she has indeed slipped into a totally different personality, that of Lena, a club-hopping swinger. When Lena gets into trouble with a man she's picked up, Beckwith intervenes and receives a brutal beating. Soon, the murder of an investigator and the death of Porter's ex-husband are laid at her feet. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

In this first episode of the long-running sitcom Frasier, former Bostonite (and Cheers regular) Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) arrives in Seattle to accept a job as a radio psychiatrist on station KACL. Advised by his brother, Niles (David Hyde Pierce), that their ex-policeman father Martin (John Mahoney) has been having trouble living alone since sustaining the gunshot wound that prompted Martin's retirement, Frasier is faced with a dilemma -- should he bundle Martin off to a nursing home or should he invite his dad to move in with him at his swanky new apartment? The answer is, of course, the latter -- but Frasier is totally unprepared for the assault on his peace of mind when Martin's outspoken, cockney physical therapist, Daphne (Jane Leeves), and the old man's phlegmatic dog, Eddie, move in as well.
