When a dangerous escaped mental patient turns up on the doorstep of a die-hard horror nerd, the witless horror aficionado attempts to mold the unwitting reject into the perfect killing machine in a blood-drenched tribute to the stalk-and-slash frighteners of yesteryear. Merv Doody (James Heathcote) may not know much, but his does know horror films; if it features sharp objects and sexually adventurous sorority girls, chances are he's seen it -- multiple times. But seeing murderous mayhem on the screen and standing face-to-face with a real-life killing machine are two very different experiences, and when the genuine article comes knocking at his front door, Merv has a serious panic attack. Upon regaining his cool and realizing the potential in the hapless killer, Merv invites best pal Onkey (Dan Palmer) over and the two soon set about executing one of the most maniacal makeovers in screen history. Now outfitted with a snazzy orange jumpsuit, an appropriately menacing hockey mask, and armed with the world's most dangerous spatula, Merv and Onkey's murderous creation soon sets out on a violent rampage of death and destruction that sends the small-town citizens of Redwater Cove running for their lives. The great British obsession with football (soccer to Americans) receives a thorough skewering in this mock documentary look at perhaps the most hapless coach in the history of professional sport. The manager of England's national football unexpectedly succumbs to a heart attack, and suddenly the search is on for a replacement. Most people who seem qualified for the position have the good sense to turn it down, and so the responsibility falls to Mike Bassett (Ricky Tomlinson), a scruffy and loud-mouthed lout whose claim to football fame is leading a previously undistinguished team to a league championship. Bassett insists that England will win the World Cup under his leadership, but that's before he replaces his star player with a once-gifted footballer (Dean Lennox Kelly) who has since developed a drinking problem, and hired a one-time car salesman (Philip Jackson) as his assistant. After several stunning losses to Poland, Bassett goes from a favorite of both fans and the press to one of the most hated men in England; hoping to whip his team into shape, he subjects them to the high-tech training methods of eccentric Dr. Shoegaarten (Ulrich Thomsen), which injures more players than it helps. Despite Bassett's ineptitude, England manages to qualify for the World Cup tournament thanks to a loophole in the rules, and he flies to Rio with his team in hopes of somehow turning their bad luck around. A British-Canadian coproduction (seen on ITV in Britain), Watership Down was a serialized TV cartoon version of Richard Adams' classic allegorical novel (previously filmed as an animated feature in 1978). The story concerned a group of rabbits who, after experiencing a vision of their warren's destruction, set out in search of a new home. Led by Hazel and Fever, the not-so-timid woodland creatures ended up in Watership Down, where a Hitler-like rabbit dictator named Gen. Woundwort held the populace in thrall.
