Richard Ramirez was a deeply disturbed Californian who worshiped Satan, believed he was in direct contact with demons, and was fascinated with the darker undercurrents of heavy metal music. Ramirez was also a serial killer; known as "The Night Stalker," Ramirez killed 19 people in Los Angeles and San Francisco between 1984 and 1985, putting both cities in the grip of fear until he was captured by authorities and eventually sentenced to life in prison. Director and screenwriter Chris Fisher made his feature debut with this dramatized account of Ramirez (played by Bret Roberts) and his crimes, as well as the detective who finally brings him to justice. As Ramirez stalks his prey under cover of darkness, Gabriella Martinez (Roselyn Sanchez), a female Los Angeles Police Department officer who has just been promoted to detective, is put on the case, and as she gets closer and closer to uncovering the identity of the killer, she runs a greater risk of becoming his next victim. Nightstalker was produced in part by character actor Danny Trejo, who also appears as Martinez's former partner on the LAPD. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In this independent horror film with a comic undertow, six college students traveling through Europe are forced to take shelter for the night in a large old rattletrap house. Trying to pass the time on a stormy night, the students play a parlor game in which they have to answer questions of a personally embarrassing nature. Several of the group reveal long held secrets, which apparently was rather upsetting to someone, because when the four get together for another trip a year later, someone seems determined to kill off their fellow students one by one. Taboo stars Nick Stahl, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Lori Heuring, and Amber Benson; the film was screened at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Lee Majors, Alison Eastwood, and Derek Hamilton star in writer/director Joey Travolta's supernatural story of a murdered father who returns from the afterlife in order to save his son from meeting a similarly grim demise. Sixty year old family man Bucko Cassidy (Lee Majors) has just been murdered for refusing to sell his homestead, and now it's looking as if his son Junior (Hamilton) is next on the list to die. Upon returning to Earth in spirit form to help his son, Bucko discovers that not only has Junior incurred the wrath of soma particularly dangerous men, but that his marriage to Ellie Rachel Wilson) is in dire straits as well. Should the marriage collapse, Junior will be forced to sell both his house and the family junkyard in order to satisfy the divorce settlement. It's only been six months since Junior buried Bucko, and lately the weight of the loss combined with the stress of his failing marriage is taking a heavy toll on him. Thankfully, despite the fact that there's some serious paperwork to be filled out before Bucko can truly return to Earth, he's been granted permission to temporarily come back in spirit form. But Junior is the only person who can see or hear Bucko, and now his friends and family are convinced that he's finally lost his marbles. Perhaps if Bucko can draw out the unique abilities that Junior possessed in his previous incarnations, his besieged son can finally summon the courage to confront his many problems with the confidence needed to truly solve them once and for all. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Four guys out for the time of their lives undergo a spiritual transformation in this youth-oriented drama. Matt (Derek Hamilton), Corey (Dante Brasco), Brian (Ryan Browning), and his brother Will (A.J. Buckley) are four close friends who share an enthusiasm for extreme sports such as skateboarding, snowboarding, motocross, and surfing. All four have recently graduated from college and still haven't decided what they want to do with their lives; figuring it may be their last chance to pick up and go without any obligations, the four load up their gear into a beat-up car and set out for a road trip up the West Coast, first heading to Mexico and then making their way up to Seattle -- or as far as their few hundred bucks will carry them. En route to Washington, the boys meet Jessie (Cassidy Rae), a pretty young woman who has found herself unexpectedly stranded and needs a ride to Seattle. Brian is immediately taken with Jessie and offers to let her ride along with him, but he and the other guys soon discover that Jessie is a bit different than the other girls they've known, and as the five head north, they learn some unexpected lessons about life and where they fit into the world. Extreme Days marked the feature film debut for director Eric Hannah, who previously directed the Moment of Truth extreme video series; the theme song was performed and co-written by Toby McKeehan from the popular Christian rock group DC Talk. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Four wacky guys take on a pack of rich stuffed shirts (does this premise sound at all familiar?) in this broad comedy. Rick (Jason London) is a slobby but good-natured snowboarder who is mending a broken heart after splitting up with Anna (Caroline Dhavernas), a girl he met while on vacation in Mexico. Rick has headed back to Bull Mountain, AK, where he and his buddies Luke (Zach Galifianakis), Anthony (Flex Alexander), and Pig Pen (Derek Hamilton) spend their days riding the slopes and their nights partying hard. Rick and his pals hope to someday open a hangout for fellow boarders, but after Papa Muntz, the city's founder and largest landowner, passes on, his son Ted (Willie Garson) sells most of his property to John Majors (Lee Majors), a wealthy but pompous developer who wants to convert Bull Mountain into Snownook, an upscale ski resort catering to yuppies. Determined to keep Bull Mountain safe for like-minded burnouts and radical skiers, Rick and the gang declare war against Majors and his associates, though Rick feels a bit conflicted by the fact that John is Anna's father -- and his daughter is tagging along with her father as he relocates to Alaska. Anna, however, has a rival for Rick's attention, as Jenny (A.J. Cook), a cute ski bum, has shown her interest in him. Out Cold was the first feature film from sibling directorial team Brendan Malloy and Emmett Malloy, who previously worked in television commercials and created several snowboarding videos. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
