Her alienation and angst having grown all season, Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg) finally makes Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) aware of her isolation in a most unexpected time and manner: magically, at her big sister's birthday party. The night of the soiree, Xander (Nicholas Brendon) and Anya (Emma Caulfield) bring a cute romantic prospect for the Slayer. Tara (Amber Benson) also attends, giving her the chance to witness Buffy's clandestine relationship with Spike (James Marsters) firsthand. Conversation between Tara and Willow (Alyson Hannigan) proves stilted, but the ex-lovers get the opportunity to bond when a mysterious spell makes everyone prisoners of the Summers house. Attempting to break the spell with magicks of her own, Tara accidentally unleashes a demon who wounds Buffy's blind date and causes general mayhem. Anya demands that recovering magic addict Willow cast an enchantment to free everyone, but Tara vigorously defends Willow's right to abstain. Eventually, the spell's author turns out to be Halfrek (Kali Rocha), an old vengeance-demon friend of Anya who's been posing as Dawn's guidance counselor. Dawn's innocent wish that none of her friends or family ever leave her again has now manifested itself as an impenetrable barrier around the house. Luckily, after Anya summons her, Halfrek falls victim to her own curse and has no choice but to break it. The guests go home, but Dawn's not off the hook; during her imprisonment, Anya discovered the hoard of jewelry and talismans that Dawn has been pilfering from the magic shop. Originally broadcast February 12, 2002, on UPN, "Older and Far Away" marked episode 114 of the cult-favorite series. A throwaway joke in this episode suggests that Halfrek is none other than Cecily, the Victorian lass Spike ineffectually romanced when he was human (see "Fool for Love"); both characters were portrayed by Kali Rocha. ~ Brian J. Fresh from Iowa, Holly (Melissa Joan Hart) and Calvin (Ryan Browning) arrive in New York, there to pursue careers as actors. Alas, money is mighty tight for the new arrivals, and decent housing is well night impossible to find. Eventually, Holly is forced to move in with her eccentric, cat-crazy Aunt Agatha (Lynne Marie Stewart), who lives in a rent-controlled apartment in the middle of an upscale neighborhood. When Aunt Agatha dies of natural causes, a desperate Holly hits upon a brilliant idea: she and Calvin will pretend that Auntie is still alive, the better to remain in the apartment for a minimal price. The couple enlist the apartment building's feckless elevator operator Dennis (Andrew Kavovit) as their co-conspirator, then spend much of the rest of the movie trying to keep their landlord's suspicious son Vincent (Joseph D. Reitman) from stumbling upon the truth. Filmed in 2002, Rent Control did not make its ABC Family Channel debut until September 9, 2005, by which time the made-for-cable film had been extensively re-edited to accelerate its pace. The film has since been released abroad under its working title Aunt Agatha's Apartment. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Four guys out for the time of their lives undergo a spiritual transformation in this youth-oriented drama. Matt (Derek Hamilton), Corey (Dante Brasco), Brian (Ryan Browning), and his brother Will (A.J. Buckley) are four close friends who share an enthusiasm for extreme sports such as skateboarding, snowboarding, motocross, and surfing. All four have recently graduated from college and still haven't decided what they want to do with their lives; figuring it may be their last chance to pick up and go without any obligations, the four load up their gear into a beat-up car and set out for a road trip up the West Coast, first heading to Mexico and then making their way up to Seattle -- or as far as their few hundred bucks will carry them. En route to Washington, the boys meet Jessie (Cassidy Rae), a pretty young woman who has found herself unexpectedly stranded and needs a ride to Seattle. Brian is immediately taken with Jessie and offers to let her ride along with him, but he and the other guys soon discover that Jessie is a bit different than the other girls they've known, and as the five head north, they learn some unexpected lessons about life and where they fit into the world. Extreme Days marked the feature film debut for director Eric Hannah, who previously directed the Moment of Truth extreme video series; the theme song was performed and co-written by Toby McKeehan from the popular Christian rock group DC Talk. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
