The conventions of the slasher movie genre get a new twist in this independent horror story. It's late October, and Eddie (Dylan Fergus) aspires to be a cop on the West Hollywood Police Force's roster, though a vision problem has kept him from passing the physical. Eddie gets the assignment to look into a grisly murder in which two men were found decapitated in a car parked on a remote lover's lane. Eddie tries to put the crime out of his mind when he heads out with three friends -- Joey (Hank Harris), Tobey (Matt Phillips), and Chaz (Andrew Levitas) -- for West Hollywood's over-the-top gay Halloween celebration. While festivity is in the air and hunky guys abound, Eddie soon discovers that the same killer he's been looking for is on the prowl at the block party, wielding a scythe and lopping off heads with aplomb. Can Eddie stop the killer before he murders his friends? And who is this fiend and what is his motivation? An unusually heavy rainstorm brings a inordinate amount of "traffic" into the ER. Outside the doors of the hospital, Weaver (Laura Innes) and a nervous, inexperienced Gallant (Sharif Atkins) risk electrocution from downed power lines to save a pregnant woman and her unborn baby. Inside, Greene (Anthony Edwards) treats a young boy whose brother was swept into a river. Carter's (Noah Wyle) grandmother, brought into the ER after sustaining injuries in a hit-and-run, begins hallucinating. Nicole (Julie Delpy), the troubled young girl befriended by Kovac (Goran Visnjic), may be stealing personal items from the staff. And Benton (Eriq La Salle) gets some disturbing news about his son, Reese (Matthew Watkins). A woman trying to come out of the closet must contend with her family, whose closets have some skeletons of their own in this independent drama. Casey (Angela Redman) is a woman from an upper class Massachusetts family whose mother (Annette Miller) expected her to go into business or one of the professions. Casey, however, has developed an interest in commercial fishing and is pursuing that as an occupation, much to her mother's chagrin. However, this is hardly Casey's biggest point of contention with her parents; Casey is a lesbian, but her parents not only openly disapprove of her lifestyle, they're openly hostile to Alex (Nina Landey), Casey's significant other. While Casey is grudgingly invited to the family's holiday celebration, Alex is not, but it turns out that Alex knows Casey's family better than they imagine; Alex makes her living counseling young people with drug problems, and one of her new clients is Casey's younger brother. A series of threatening e-mails suggests that a young nurse found unconscious after falling down a flight of stairs was the victim of a voyeuristic cyber-stalker. Further investigation reveals that the woman may have faked her own attack as means of drawing police attention to her plight. As a result, the case is dropped -- and a murder occurs soon afterward. In a powerful courtroom finale, detective partners Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) and Curtis (Benjamin Bratt) each provide testimony which contradicts the other's words. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
