In this drama, a woman with a sordid past desires to marry. Her intended is so in love that he disregards the many warnings he receives about her and goes through with the ceremony. Soon he loses every friend, and even his daughter begins to pull away. It does not help that his new wife is abusive to the girl. It is then learned that the step-mother is abusive because the girl's fiancé is one of the wicked woman's many lovers. Things immediagely go wrong when her fiance, the town doctor, wanting to focus on his career, refuses to abandon his patients and go galavanting across Europe. In this tuneful and sentimental romance, a young architect from France falls in love with his employer's daughter. Unfortunately, she feels differently and marries another. The loss inspires him to quit his job and return to France where he becomes a wanderer. Eventually he encounters a beautiful gypsy and together they form a minstrel act. When she learns that he must return to England at summer's end, she is very sad. He too is sad, but he goes and discovers that the first woman didn't marry after all. He is happy until he sees that she is really an avaricious, conniving gold digger. Soon he is back in France with the good-hearted woman he has really come to love. Music-hall comedian Arthur Riscoe is ideally cast as the title character in Public Nuisance No. 1. The plot and the title are one in the same, as Arthur Rawlings (Riscoe) plies his trade as a waiter, noisily making a mess of things but remaining impishly lovable withal. Heroine Frances Travers (Frances Day) is a shop girl whose wealthy uncle owns the hotel where Arthur works. Against all odds, Frances and Arthur join forces to save the hotel from bankruptcy. The trouble begins when the ass, a mild-mannered clerk, accidently finds out that his boss is a Spanish revolutionary and leader of a ring of counterfeiters. The clerk soon finds himself abducted by the revolutionaries and taken to Spain. There his boss's daughter helps him to escape. In this actioner, two guards lose their jobs after they start a fight with a lascivious Arab prince who tries to seduce one of their girl friends. Fortunately, the girl friend's father is thankful and gives her love a job managing one of his tobacco warehouses in Turkey. Unfortunately, he meets a beautiful Russian girl there and soon falls in love. Later he learns that she is being used by the prince who is conspiring to take over the Turkish government. Later his ex-partner and his girl come to Turkey to help him stop the prince. Action ensues, but in the end the prince is defeated and Turkey is saved. A remake of a German film, No Monkey Business certainly lives down to its title. Goonish comedian Richard Hearne dominates the film as Charlie, the acrobat pal of circus performer Jim Carroll (Gene Gerrard). In love with anthropologist's daughter Clare Barrington (June Clyde), Jim realizes that he'll never impress the girl unless he proves himself of a scientific nature. Thus, Jim talks Charlie into posing as a gorilla, then claims that he's trained the "beast," thereby thrilling Clare. The plot thickens when a real gorilla appears on the scene. A scurrilous blackmailer is murdered by one of his victims, but it is innocent John Loder who is suspected of the crime. Making the casual acquaintance of Loder, Lord Peter Wimsey sets about to prove his new friend's innocence. It all takes place on a train trip from London to the English Channel, with Loder acting as bait to flush out the real killer. Dorothy L. Originally released in 1934 as Death at Broadcasting House, this musty British whodunit was distributed in the US in 1941 to cash in on the Hollywood-engendered popularity of its star, Ian Hunter. Set in a BBC radio studio, the story gets under way when a much-despised airwaves personality is murdered in the middle of a live broadcast. Scotland Yard inspector Gregory (Ian Hunter) shows up to piece together the clues and sift through the suspects. The solution of the mystery hinges on the fact that the victim insisted upon broadcasting in a private room, far removed from his fellow actors. Inspector Gregory provides this solution by coming up with a transcription of the fatal broadcast (this at a time when few radio programs were recorded for posterity).
