Suburban ennui manifests itself in a disturbing manner in this black comedy from Spain. Berta (Silvia Marso) and Esteban (Alberto Jimenez) are a couple living in an upscale planned community with their children Oliver (Samuel Viyuela Gonzalez) and Lucia (Andrea Blasco Sierra). While on the surface Berta and Esteban seem happy and successful, in truth they're both suffering from depression, anxiety and loss of sexual appetite, and their children are becoming as neurotic as their folks. One day, a dead bird drops from the sky and lands at Berta's feet; she panics and warns the kids to stay away from the street where it happened, through Oliver sneaks out to rescue the bird's corpse. Living down the street are Hugo (Eduardo Blanco) and Monica (Claudia Fontan), who want their neighbors to think they're wealthy even though they're nearly broke, and while their friends think they've sent their daughter Greta (Ines Aldea) to an exclusive private school in America, she's actually locked up in the house and forbidden to show herself. Birds continue to turn up dead around the neighborhood, and Hugo and Esteban take it upon themselves to find out what's killing them when they aren't busy spying on a pair of teenage girls living close by. Pajaros Muertos (aka Dead Birds) was the first feature film from the sibling directing team of Guillermo Sempere and Jorge Sempere. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A man struggles with family, money and the law in this multi-layered drama from Spanish filmmaker J.A. Salgot. Marc (Ariel Casas) dabbles in the real estate market, but he earns most of his money dealing drugs, while his wife Tes (Silvia Marso) has a job with a successful advertising and marketing firm. When Marc's mother dies suddenly, he opens his doors to his father Alberto (Joan Dalmau), who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. As Marc tries to come to terms with his father's mortality and deteriorating mental state, he has troubles of his own; he's deep in debt to drug wholesaler Rosario (Ana Fibla), who has sent his henchman Rafa (Jordi Sanchez) to collect. Also, Marc's relationship with his teenage daughter Carla (Susana Fawaz) has become distant, and the girl longs for guidance after watching a handful of her friends set fire to a homeless man while they were high on drugs. Myway received its American premiere at the 2008 Santa Barbara Film Festival as part of a program of new Latin cinema. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Three women face a wide variety of problems in their dealings with men in this drama. Cristina (Pilar Punzano), Ana (Silvia Marso), and Rosa (Rosa Mariscal) are sisters who are each dealing with different problems in their love lives. Cristina, who has a good-natured enthusiasm for sex, is trying to get her relationship with Willy (Guillaume Depardieu), a visiting art student from France, off the ground. Ana is trapped in a failing marriage with thoughtless Borja (Guillermo Toledo). And Rosa is a virgin who has buried her ill-starred romantic longings in favor of her career. The three sisters, however, were all at one time or another involved with Mikel (Nancho Novo), a charming ne'er-do-well with a drug habit, and they find their emotional lives intersecting again when Ana nearly dies after taking too many sleeping pills. Amor, Curiosiad, Prozac y Dudas was based the best-selling novel by Lucia Etxeberria, who also adapted her story for the screen. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
