To most people, the mere mention of professional wrestling conjures up images of ridiculously large men in silly costumes beating the life out of one another, but in this documentary viewers are invited to witness the feminine side of sports entertainment. Back in the so-called Golden Era of wrestling, fans would have likely scoffed at the idea of female fighters. Then in the 1940s, audience expectations were turned upside down when Moolah and Young came along to prove that females can crack skulls just as much ferocity as their male counterparts. It was Moolah and Young who paved the groundwork for such brawling babes as former Playboy model April Hunter, and WWE superstar Joanie Laurer (aka Chyna). From the WWE to the WCW, ECW, and even TNA, this lively look at the world of female wrestling speaks with over a dozen lethal ladies in order to explore all the temptations and politics that go along with being the "fairer sex" in what has historically been a male dominated industry. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The world of professional wrestling is peopled by giants of men and women whose names often reflect their size and girth or fierceness. Marketing and public relations play a big part in this multi-million-dollar entertainment industry, in which fan allegiance depends as much on image as skill. This program from the History Channel examines the history of wrestling and its evolution into today's televised spectacles. Interviews with wrestlers, fans, sports historians, and psychologists give the viewer an inside look at the phenomenon of modern pro wrestling. Archival film footage presents excerpts from some of the most exciting matches in the sport's history. ~ Rose of Sharon Winter, All Movie Guide
Before it was a circus, it was grassroots entertainment. These square-circled matches feature the legends of the ring, including such champions as Gorgeous George, Ilio Dipaolo, Antonino Rocca, and Hans Schmidt. While these are classic bouts, the main event highlights one of the dirtiest grapplers of all time, The Sheik. With his patented submission hold, "the camel clutch," he wages war against the man from South America, Bobo Brazil. Produced by Worldvision Home Video, this 60-minute tape takes the wrestling fan back to a time when the good guys wore white hats and the bad guys wore black.

A look at the "olden days" of professional wrestling. Although less flamboyant and flashy as those in the WWF today, the original wrestlers of the '50s, '60s and '70s still put on quite a show for the crowds. The early matches featured down-and-dirty action between participants clad only in trunks and boots, in contrast to the gaudy outfits worn by today's stars. A few superstars did emerge and are featured here, including Gorgeous George, Haystacks Calhoun, and Andre the Giant. Sometimes filmed only in black-and-white, these classic matches stand firm as the prototypes on which today's ostentatious bouts are modeled.
