After considering several candidates, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) decides who will be her roommates during her first-year internship. Back on the job, she butts heads with a pediatric intern to save the life of a newborn child, and also claims temporary possession of a gruesome "souvenir" left behind by the man who raped her patient Allison (Alex Thayer). Meanwhile, Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Alex (Justin Chambers) get their act together, so to speak; George (T.R. Knight) spends a few disheartening hours with the Seattle Grace code team; and Izzie (Katherine Heigl) copes with a patient who speaks no English. But when Jay's best friend is linked to the murder of a kid from a rival clique, the laid back teen finds his conscience in direct conflict with his sense of character. His best friend consumed by guilt, Jay gradually begins forms a bond with free spirited beauty Wendy. Richard (Edward Herrmann) is devastated when his mother Trix unexpectedly dies (though Marion Ross quickly returns to the series in the new role of cousin Marilyn), but this pales in comparison to Emily's (Kelly Bishop) reaction upon unearthing evidence of how truly and deeply Trix despised her. With her parents in no condition to think straight, it falls to Lorelai (Lauren Graham) to plan the funeral, right down to selecting the guest of honor's underwear. Avon Kirkland's Ralph Ellison: An American Journey takes a close look at the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ralph Ellison. In addition to the expected array of experts that analyze Ellison's work, Kirkland intersperses dramatized scenes from Ellison's only novel Invisible Man, including the infamous blind battle royal that appears in the beginning of the book. Andre Braugher (Homicide) provides the narration. In this made-for-television adaptation of the short story by Ralph Ellison, Sonny (Colman Domingo) is an African-American man from the Deep South who has moved to Harlem in the early '40s in hopes of building a better life for himself, his wife, and their unborn child. However, Sonny has had no luck in finding work; desperate, he happens into a movie theater on Bingo night, and to his surprise he wins a card and is called to the stage to spin the prize wheel. For a brief moment, Sonny feels as if fate has finally been put in his hands, but tragically, he's unable to let it go when the powers that be deem it necessary.
