It's hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys in this slick, densely plotted thriller from France. Cash (Jean Dujardin) is a suave and well-mannered outlaw who specializes in grand-scale heists that turn on carefully constructed confidence games as much as muscle. When Cash's brother and partner in crime Solal (Clovis Cornillac) is killed by members of a rival outfit who try to force their way into a carefully planned heist, Cash assembles a new crew to rob the gunmen for their ill-gotten gains. Cash joins forces with Maxime Dubreuil (Jean Reno), a gifted veteran thief who brings along his beautiful protégé Garance (Alice Taglioni). As Cash, Maxime and Garance map out plans for the robbery of a lifetime, they're joined by Julia (Valeria Golino), a beautiful woman with a full compliment of criminal skills. But what they don't know is that Julia is actually an undercover police officer who is looking to shut down Cash's operation from the inside. Filmmaker Mark Bamford explores issues of race, class, and faith in contemporary South Africa against a witty backdrop in this comedy drama. Kate (Debbie Brown) runs an animal shelter that seems to attract as many human misfits and cast-offs as dogs and cats; still dealing with the emotional fallout of being abandoned by her father as a girl, Kate welcomes both two- and four-legged friends into her shelter, but isn't quite so open with her heart, and is looking for true love after a series of busted marriages. Jean-Claude (Eriq Ebouaney) is a scientist exiled from West Africa who works at the shelter to make ends meet; while his political and economic fortunes have hit the bricks, his spirit has not, and he has a knack for charming kids, women, and vicious dogs. Lindiwe (Nthati Moshesh) is a single mother attempting to support her son and finish her education after the death of her husband, both against steep odds. Dr. Morne (Morne Visser) is a veterinarian who has also lost his spouse, and seems to carry a torch for Kate. And Habib (David Isaacs) and Sharifa (Quanita Adams) are a couple whose marriage of eight years is on the verge of collapse due to her inability to conceive, testing both their patience and their faith. Patrice Lumumba was a passionate advocate for freedom in colonial Africa, and when the Belgian Congo was granted independent (and was later renamed Zaire), Lumumba was the new nation's first prime minister. However, Lumumba's dream of freedom and dignity for the people of the Congo made him a controversial and dangerous figure, and this biographical drama explores his short, tumultuous life. We first encounter Lumumba (Eriq Ebouaney) in the late 1950's, when his National Congo Movement is gaining widespread public support, despite opposition from the nation's political leaders. Hoping to avoid a violent overthrow, the Belgian government begins negotiations with the NCM to turn rule of the Congo over to the citizens, and Lumumba and his political party are swept into power during the nation's first independent election. However, Lumumba's desire to bring a peaceful and orderly transfer of power soon earns him enemies of all political stripes. Militant advocates for freedom demand that white Belgian officers of the nation's military be replaced with African soldiers at once, while Belgian colonists are met with violence, sparking a revolt by the white settlers that leads to a bloody civil war. Siegfried made his directorial debut with this French drama. In addition to directing and scripting, the multi-talented twentysomething Siegfried composed the film's jazzy, uptempo music score and also shared the camerawork (with Vincent Buron and Herve Lode) that features handheld scenes tracking through the Paris Metro. The central role of Louise is portrayed by Elodie Bouchez, who won a 1998 Cannes "Best Actress" award for The Dreamlife of Angels. When Louise has an encounter with homeless Remi (Roschdy Zem), they have a magnetic attraction, but she is already attached to illiterate shoplifter and pickpocket punk Yaya (Gerald Thomassin). Although allied with Yaya in petty crimes, Louise lives with her widowed father (Lou Castel), a devoted writer of fiction. After a Metro bum (Bruce Myers) tells her of his desire to see his young son, she plucks the kid, Gaby (Antoine de Merle), right out of school, making him the newest rookie recruited into their subway gang. Shoplifting in a department store, the young toughs escape the store's security guards by hiding in the ballet rehearsal rooms of the nearby opera. But does Louise really belong with the subway toughs, or is she just pretending? When she's arrested, Louise is forced to reexamine her lifestyle. Some aspects of the plot parallel Leos Carax's haunting and memorable Les Amants du Pont-Neuf (1991) -- as does the use of genuine homeless people in certain scenes. Parisienne mother Mathilde (Sandrine Kiberlain), who shares a large apartment with her surgeon husband Nico (Vincent Lindon), sometimes works at the legal business run by her mother (Francine Berge). With a stagnant sex life, the bored Mathilde prowls department stores to steal toys for her son. At a party with Nico, she realizes she's being watched by a doctor (Francois Berleand), and she spots him on the metro the following day. He tells her he's a psychiatrist, and they have their first session in a deserted restaurant. While the doctor's cure does appear to work for Mathilde, there's a trade-off: Nico's behavior becomes increasingly abnormal. When the Cat's Away is a gentle French comedy that explores the problems and anxieties of contemporary urbanites. When Chloe (Garance Clavel), a young Parisian, decides to take a long-overdue vacation, she has to find someone to look after Gris-Gris, her beloved cat. Everyone, including her gay male roommate, refuses to help her, but she finally makes an arrangement with the elderly Madame Renée (Renée Le Calm), who often watches over other peoples' cats and dogs. However, when Chloe comes back, Madame Renée tells her that unfortunately the cat has been lost, and the unlucky owner goes on a search for her dear animal friend.
