During this episode, the raft that Michael (Harold Perrineau) has been hard at work on goes up in flames, and accusations are flying as to who is responsible. Further insight into the marriage of Korean passengers Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) and Sun (Yunjin Kim) is given via flashbacks showing the violent work that Jin had been doing for her father. When Sun reveals a secret to everyone that she has been keeping from even her husband, there may be unwanted consequences. Also, Sayid (Naveen Andrews) has something to tell Boone (Ian Somerhalder) about his sibling Shannon (Maggie Grace), and it may not be good news. In one of the flashback sequences, Hurley (Jorge Garcia) pops up on a TV screen -- but whose TV screen? And what is he doing on TV in the first place? ~ All Movie Guide

Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker) decides to expand her pot operation to the Valley State campus. When she hears Silas' (Hunter Parrish) math tutor, Sanjay (Maulik Pancholy), complaining about being too poor to afford a real college, she decides to make him her campus rep. She takes him to school, and they give out free samples. Heylia (Tonye Patano) later explains to Nancy that she has to keep her distance from the actual dealing; her clientele on campus should never meet her face-to-face. Nancy implements a new, safer routine for Sanjay and his crew, and gives them all disposable cell phones. But it's clear she's made an enemy when she finds her car assaulted by what seems to be an entire roll of pennies. At home, Shane (Alexander Gould) has finally made a new friend at school, Max (Forrest Landis of the Cheaper By the Dozen films). Andy (Justin Kirk) helpfully teaches them that instead of studying for their next test, they can simply order the teacher's edition of their textbook. Andy is thrilled when Max's mom, Eileen (Clare Carey), turns out to be hot and single, but she also turns out to be too much for him to handle. Celia (Elizabeth Perkins), in the hospital for chemo, gets an unwelcome visit from her mother, whose constant criticism of Celia, Dean (Andy Milder), and Isabelle (Allie Grant) forces the Hodes family to bond together and take drastic action. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Jack (Matthew Fox) and Sayid (Naveen Andrews) resort to drastic measures (reminiscent of old Fu Manchu movies!) when Sawyer (Josh Holloway) refuses to surrender one of the inhalers he claims he has to help the short-of-breath Shannon (Maggie Grace). Elsewhere on the island, Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) has made a home for himself in the caves, and hopes that Claire (Emilie de Raven) will join him. And in the obligatory flashback "revelation" scenes, the truth about Sawyer's background is revealed; meanwhile, Kate (Evangeline Lilly) gains some insight into his troubled childhood, and we learn for the first time that killing a man is nothing new for Sayid. ~ All Movie Guide

Created by West Wing writer Lawrence O'Donnell Jr., the weekly, 60-minute political drama Mister Sterling was a Mr. Smith Goes to Washington for the 21st century. Josh Brolin starred as William Sterling Jr., the idealistic young "reformist" son of a popular retired California governor (James Whitmore). Selected by his state's political machine to fill out the term of a dead Democratic senator, Mister Sterling arrived in the nation's capitol with a naïvely altruistic agenda -- and with no party ties, since he was a registered Independent (though in West Wing tradition, he tended to veer toward the left). Doing their best to educate Sterling to the facts of life about Washington, and sometimes expressing amazement at how much smarter he was than the "established" politicos, were his chief of staff, Jackie Brock (Audra McDonald); his legislative director, Tommy Doyle (William Russ); and resident techno-geek Leon (David Noroña). Mister Sterling was elected to office on January 10, 2003. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

When a group of ruthless, demonic hunters known as the Scourge begin killing a family of helpless half-demons because of their mixed blood, it brings back painful memories for Doyle (Glenn Quinn) of the years he spent denying his own half-demonic nature. Angel (David Boreanaz) swiftly moves into action, going undercover in the Scourge and also arranging safe passage on a ship for the half-demons. But when one of the half-breeds, a troubled teen, runs away, Doyle must find and rescue him, delaying the ship's departure. By then, a double-cross has tipped off the Scourge to the ship's location and they show up, bloodthirsty, before it can leave port. Meanwhile, Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter) learns of Doyle's true nature and responds not with the disgust he was expecting, but with shock that he avoided telling her. She agrees to go out with Doyle, fulfilling his greatest wish, but it's not to be. The Scourge unleash a terrible weapon designed to destroy everyone with human blood in a quarter-mile radius. Doyle sacrifices himself to turn the weapon off, leaving Cordelia with a passionate goodbye kiss. Originally broadcast November 30, 1999, on the WB network, "Hero" marked season one, episode nine of the supernatural comedy drama. Although some reports indicated a rift between actor Glenn Quinn and the show's producers, his character's death was actually planned early in the show's development. ~ Brian J. On the night before Halloween, Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and friends attend a costume party at the Alpha Delta house. Oz (Seth Green) helps prepare the sound system, subsequently cutting himself and dripping blood onto an occult symbol a frat brother is painting on the floor. Unbeknownst to everyone, the symbol summons the fear demon Gachnar, who forces everyone to face their fears. As Buffy, still hung up on Parker (Adam Kaufman), fears being alone, Oz fears the monster within himself. Meanwhile, Willow (Alyson Hannigan) fears she cannot control her magic, and Xander (Nicholas Brendon) fears his friends will forget about him. His may be the most well-founded worry, as no one tells him about the party and he (almost) stays home alone to watch Phantasm instead. This is also the first time that Buffy actually notices the Initiative Commandos -- see "The Initiative" -- but mistakes them for costumed students. ~ All Movie Guide
