While he never fared as well in the ratings as Johnny Carson, talk show host Dick Cavett developed an enthusiastic following in the late '60s and early '70s for his witty and intelligent interviewing style, as well as his willingness to book guests who might not fit the framework of most traditional chat shows. One such guest was legendary guitarist and songwriter Jimi Hendrix, who appeared twice on Cavett's program. Jimi Hendrix: The Dick Cavett Show is a video which features -- in their entirety -- the two episodes of The Dick Cavett Show with Hendrix as guest. Hendrix talks about his life and his music, as well as performing several numbers, including "Machine Gun" and "Hear My Train A-Comin'." The video also includes another episode of the Cavett show taped the day after the conclusion of the legendary Woodstock Music and Art Fair; while Hendrix does not appear, his bandmates Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox were on hand to discuss their set at the legendary festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

This documentary examines the making of the critically acclaimed, multi-platinum Jimi Hendrix double album Electric Ladyland. Televised initially on VH1 and then on PBS, the Rhino Home Video release of this program contains additional footage not seen on the TV version. The story is told using archival film clips, the diary of one of Hendrix's employees, demos, live performances, home movies, and still photos, intercut with interviews featuring bandmembers Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell, singer/keyboard player Stevie Winwood, engineer Eddie Kramer, and Hendrix's manager, Chas Chandler (in his final interview). Hendrix produced Electric Ladyland himself, and the 1968 LP contained his biggest hit -- a cover of the Bob Dylan song "All Along the Watch Tower," as well as "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," which later covered by Stevie Ray Vaughan. Named after Hendrix's New York studio where it was recorded, Electric Ladyland featured guest performances by Buddy Miles, Steve Winwood, Jack Casady, Dave Mason, Chris Wood, and Al Cooper. ~ Steve Blackburn, All Movie Guide

Add The Rolling Stones: Rock and Roll Circus to QueueAdd The Rolling Stones: Rock and Roll Circus to top of Queue
Fans of late '60s rock and roll will find this documentary to be a rare and precious jewel, as it contains shining performances from such giants as The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and The Who. Originally planned as a television special in 1968, it was shelved shortly after filming because the manager of the Stones, who were acting producers of the show, felt that another of the acts, The Who, upstaged them. The show is set up as a circus with the musicians appearing in elaborate psychedelic costumes. Other performers include Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, and the only recently formed Jethro Tull. Also included is a one-of-a-kind performance by The Dirty Mac, a one-night-stand band comprised of Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Mitch Mitchell, and Keith Richards. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

One of the most popular characters in British children's literature, the delightfully mischievous schoolboy Jennings was created for a 1948 BBC radio series by former schoolteacher Anthony Buckeridge. The character subsequently appeared in several books, and on at least two occasions was transferred to television. The first British video appearance of Jennings was in the ten-episode series Jennings at School, based on the 1950 novel of the same name. Enrolling at Linbury Court boarding school, Jennings (John Mitchell) and his sidekick Darbyshire (Derek Needs) wreaked all manner of harmless havoc, especially whenever they tried to match wits with fearsome headmaster Mr. Wilkins (Wilfred Babbage). Jennings at School was broadcast from September 6 to November 8, 1958. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
