Interdit au Public might prove an interesting companion piece to the stage farce Noises Off. The action takes place at a theater during the final dress rehearsal of a new play. The comedy arises from the backstage intrigues involving the actors and tech crew. When the leading lady falls ill (she's been hiding her pregnancy), the director (Jacques Erwin) is forced to rely on his ex-wife (Jacqueline Gauthier) to fill in. This proves to be disastrous when the ex-wife's new husband falls in love with the director's new wife--and that's just for starters. Before long, the farcical entanglements behind the scenes rival anything that any playwright could have dreamed up. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

L'Assassin n'est pa Comable translates as The Murderer is Not Guilty -- a seemingly paradoxical title, but perfectly true within context of the story. Jules Berry plays a famous film star whose latest production is plagued with bad luck. Eventually a murder is committed on the set, and the most likely suspected is arrested. Berry believes that the "killer" is innocent, and decides to play detective to prove it. Of interest is the fact that the story unfolds in its entirety at a movie studio, thereby saving the producers the cost of building sets. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

French cabaret entertainer Georges Guetary, best remembered as Gene Kelly's romantic rival in An American in Paris, plays the title role in The Loves of Casanova. Most of the story concerns the Great Lover's migration from Venice to Paris in search of fame, fortune and fetching damsels. Every so often, Casanova serenades his lady fair with a robust song, indication enough that historical accuracy is not this film's strong suit. There seems to have been an attempt by the filmmakers to poke fun at the Sinatra craze in America, inasmuch as women tend to swoon at the sound of Casanova's voice. Except for the presence of Georges Guetary, whose film appearances were all too few, The Loves of Casanova is a draggy, pedestrian affair. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Tombe du Ciel (Dropped from Heaven) is a showcase for the expansive talents of that genial ham Claude Dauphin. The star plays one of five musicians -- four men and a girl -- stranded in a rural community. While at dinner, the male musicians get royally drunk, waking with monumental hangovers and no memories of the past night's events. But Dauphin seems to recall that he dallied in the hayloft with the female member of the band -- and nine months later, it looks as if he was right! A bit too mature for the character he portrays, Claude Dauphin nonetheless scores on sheer personality. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
