Duel at the Rio Grande was initially titled The Sign of Zorro, but apparently the copyright police were on the job that day. Sean Flynn, son of Errol, stars in the Italian/French/Spanish coproduction as Zorro, fop by day, masked-and-caped righter of wrongs by night. Danielle De Metz costars as the lovely Spanish-California senorita whose virtue is forever in jeopardy. The younger Flynn continued pursuing an acting career into the mid-1960s, then became a freelance photojournalist. While covering the war in Vietnam, Flynn vanished without a trace in 1970, presumably captured or killed by the Vietcong. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Les Gueux Au Paradis (Hoboes in Paradise) stars two of Marseilles' favorite sons, Fernandel and Raimu. Set during the reign of Louis XV, the film casts Raimu as an innkeeper and Fernandel as his best friend. Dressed up as saints for a masquerade, the two pals are killed in a carriage mishap. They take a quick trip to Hell, where it is decided that they are inappropriately garbed, then ascend to Heaven, where it is determined that it isn't yet "their time." Our heroes are returned to life just in time to foil an attempt by the undertaker to seduce Raimu's "widow." Ironically, Les Gueux au Paradis was Raimu's next-to-last film; he died in 1946, shortly after the picture's release. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In films from 1937, Bernard Blier at last essays his first starring role in Monsieur Gregoire S'Evade. The title character is a meek insurance clerk who finds himself the unwitting dupe of a gang of jewel thieves. Worried that he'll be blamed for the theft, M. Gregoire takes it on the lam (hence the title). He undergoes numerous amusing misadventures before he is able to clear himself and nab the real crooks. Oddly, Monsieur Gregoire S'Evade is not listed on most of the published "official" resumes of Bernard Blier's film work, even though it was his "breakthrough" picture. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Amidst a sea of French wartime melodramas, the nonsensical plot convolutions of 120 Rue de la Gare came as a relief. The film exists solely as a vehicle for the comic talents of Rene Dary, here cast as a private detective. Dary finds himself up to his neck in danger when he endeavors to solve a baffling mystery. 120 Rue de la Gare was taken (presumably as far as possible) from a novel by Leo Malet. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
