When an unexplained trucking accident knocks out phone lines in the town of Pueblo, New Mexico and blocks the only route out of town, an investigation into the cause of the crash reveals an otherworldly creature that could pose a threat to the entire human race. Awakening from her usual hangover to investigate a herd of cattle that has been mutilated almost beyond recognition, Pueblo Sheriff Annie is summoned to the scene of a mysterious semi accident. Though the only clue as to the identity to the driver is a severed limb, Sheriff Annie does discover a bizarre, crab-like leg stuck in the grill of the scorched tanker. Meanwhile, on another stretch of the same highway, vacationing sisters Ally and Caya stop to pick up a ruggedly handsome ranch hand named Charlie whose car has stalled out miles away from a gas station or repair shop. Upon arriving at the only gas station in Pueblo, the trio is greeted by Nodin and her grandfather and informed that not only are the pumps dry, but that the only route out of town is blocked by the accident as well. Also trapped at the station is traveling salesman Frank, who specializes in synthetic urine. As night draws near Sheriff Annie arrives at the gas station to share her strange find with botany specialist Nodin, who can find no earthly explanation for the unidentified appendage. Later, when Ally decides to pitch in by taking out the trash, she is savagely mauled by a vicious creature that has just torn the patrons of a local bar limb from limb. As the night drags on and the bloodbath continues, the frightened group discovers that their only hope for survival may the very same Native American girl responsible to unleashing the relentless beast in the first place. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

It promises to be a busy week at the Federal courthouse in this final episode of Monk's fourth season. The Feds are prepared to escort "most-wanted" criminal Miguel Escobar (Carlos Gomez) to his long-overdue trial, and Monk (Tony Shalhoub) is summoned to jury duty on a minor robbery case. Though it makes him queasy to be locked in a room with eleven strangers, Monk appears to be in no hurry to leave when he is the only one to vote "Not Guilty." As he tries to sway the other jurors to his way of thinking, Monk finds himself saddled with another legal headache when the body of a dead woman is found stuffed in a dumpster just outside the courtroom. A pregnant girl trapped in a woman's health clinic makes a disturbing discovery about the child growing inside of her while attempting to fight off her father and three heavily armed brothers in director John Carpenter's second Masters of Horror episode. A young couple is driving down a darkened country road when frightened Angelique (Caitlin Wachs) darts frantically into their headlights. Realizing that the young girl is terrified beyond consolation and shaken by the near accident she caused, the kindly couple informs Angelique that they are currently en route to a nearby clinic and would be happy to give her a ride. Shortly after arriving at the clinic with their young charge, however, Angelique's enraged father, Dwayne (Ron Perlman), arrives with two sons in tow and enough firepower to stage a small war. Staunch anti-abortion activist Dwayne is determined to liberate his daughter from the evil clinic in which she has sought sanctuary, but as he prepares to storm the building, Angelique makes a horrifying discovery about her unborn child. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Based on a comic book series created by Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti, the made-for-cable Painkiller Jane stars Emmanuelle Vaugier as Jane Elizabeth Browning, a young Marine captain who is the sole survivor when her Special Ops force is exposed to a biochemical "retrovirus" weapon after raiding an illegal lab. It turns out that the retrovirus has endowed Jane with miraculous self-healing powers, making her virtually invulnerable. Unfortunately, she isn't given much of an opportunity to exercise this unique gift before she is locked up in a military hospital on orders from government shrink Lucas Knight (Tate Donovan). Unwilling to act as guinea pig for an upcoming series of medical experiments, Jane escapes her confines and becomes a fugitive, not only from the government but also from a secret conspiratorial cartel which numbers Dr. Knight (aka Lucas Insley) among its members! She spends the rest of the film thwarting villains and writing wrongs (usually in Bionic Woman-style slow motion action scenes), with the help of her new cohort, handsome thief Nick (Eric Dane). Former Shaft star Richard Roundtree is seen as Jane's Marine mentor Col. Watts, who reluctantly assumes the "Inspector Javert" role in tracking her down on behalf of the authorties. Billed as an "original event" when it first aired December 9, 2005 on the Sci-Fi Channel, the entertaining but highly derivative Painkiller Jane has "two-hour series pilot" written all over it. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In the first episode of Smallville's two-part season-two finale, Clark (Tom Welling) finally works up the nerve to kiss Lana (Kristin Kreuk) -- only to be distracted by a perplexing message from beyond. The message, consisting of the words "The Day Is Coming," has also been received by Dr. Walden (Rob La Belle), a mentally unbalanced linguist. The two-part season-three opener of Smallville picks up three months after the cataclysmic events that brought season two to a close. Feeling responsible for the series of disasters that culminated in the death of his adoptive mother Martha's (Annette O'Toole) unborn baby, troubled teenager Clark Kent (Tom Welling) has bolted Smallville and exiled himself in Metropolis, still under the influence of the dangerous, addictive red kryptonite. Under the alias "Kal" (as in Kal-El, which had been his name when he was born on the planet Krypton), Clark is living the life of a rebellious street punk, and has fallen in with criminal boss Morgan Edge (Rutger Hauer). Following the leads given him by Clark's high school friend Chloe (Allison Mack), the boy's human adoptive father, Jonathan Kent (John Schneider), armed with temporary superpowers bestowed on him by Clark's real dad, Jor-El, is determined to bring his adopted son back to Smallville -- and back to normal. Meanwhile, it seems that Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) did not die in that plane crash at the end of season two -- but he may wish he had. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this family-friendly comedy drama, Walter (Haley Joel Osment) is a shy and bookish boy just short of his teens whose mother impulsively decides to leave him for the summer with his eccentric grand-uncles, Hub (Robert Duvall) and Garth (Michael Caine). Walter isn't especially happy about being left in the middle of Texas with two old men, while Hub and Garth aren't too pleased to be stuck minding a boy, especially one who isn't accustomed to hunting, fishing, or firearms. When Walter starts hearing local gossip about his uncles' wild and wooly pasts, he begins asking a few questions, and while Hub and Garth don't enjoy having the boy poking into their pasts, as they start telling tales of their youthful adventures, they find themselves itching for some new adventures in their lives. Soon Walter is a semi-willing accomplice as his elderly guardians rediscover the wild, impulsive spirit of youth. Secondhand Lions was produced in part by the well-respected visual effects house Digital Domain, who also helped create the imagery for the film's flashback sequences. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Because she has been neglecting her magic to concentrate on her newspaper job, Phoebe (Holly Marie Combs) is slowly but surely losing her premonition skills. This problem intensifies when the Charmed Ones attempt to protect the last surviving member of a gypsy tribe from an evil entity determined to steal the gypsy's eyes. In other plot complications, Paige (Rose McGowan) is down in the dumps over being unemployed, and Piper (Holly Marie Combs) is upset that Leo (Brian Krause), worried that the girls' powers will be exposed to the world, refuses to let her see a doctor during the last stages of her pregnancy. ~ All Movie Guide
