When her aristocratic lover Andre (Lucien Galas) is forced to give her up in favor of a wealthy marriage, Nicolette (Grazia del Rio) is so despondent that she nearly commits suicide. Instead, she agrees to become the mistress of the much-older Comte de Richbourg (Pierre Magnier). It so happens that the Comte is Andre's father, which should give the modern viewer a good idea of the "do as I say, not as I do" mentality prevalent in the France of the '30s. All ends happily, however, when De Richbourg nobly steps aside so that Nicolette and Andre can be reunited. Petite de Montparnasse was simultaneously filmed in a German-language version. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The title of this French comedy translates as Cheer Up Boys. The story takes place during a famous annual bicycle race, with cyclists from all of Europe converging on France, much to the delight of the local journalists. Singing star Biscot plays the hero, who manages to peddle his way to victory, singing merrily all the way. Comedy-relief actor Kerny manages to steal the spotlight from Biscot on several occasions, but in the end there's little doubt as to who the film's star really is. Hardi Les Gars was filmed hot on the heels of another cycling epic, the popular Roi des Resquillers. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Based on a story by Anatole France, the silent Crainquebille was updated and directed by Jacques Feyder. Heavily influenced by the then-popular school of German symbolism, the film nonetheless bears traces of the French realism that would dominate the Gallic cinema of the 1930s. This 6-reeler stars child actor Jean Forest, whom Feyder would utilize to even better effect in his follow-up films Visage d'Enfants and Gribiche. The film, an essentially adult effort, is told from Forest's point of view, solidifying Feyder's expertise at directing children. Released in France in 1922, Crainquebille made the international rounds the following year. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
